Why our students love Ottawa
Posted on Monday, October 29th, 2018
Instead of listing off our favourite things about Ottawa, we asked students on Instagram for their thoughts — and there were more than a few surprises. Here’s what they had to say!
“The people. Everyone is so kind and welcoming.”
Ottawa was voted by students as the Top Student City in 2017 and “kindness” was a big factor in that ranking. With so many students here, there are always tons of activities where you can meet new people. Even though Ottawa’s population tops a million, it’s often described as a big city with a small town feel. Multiculturalism and diversity are celebrated every day. No matter where you come from, you’ll feel like a local in no time!
“Parliament Hill (which looks like the Hogwarts School from Harry Potter)”
We’d never thought about it that way — but it’s kind of true! Wizards aside, Parliament Hill is an iconic part of Ottawa’s downtown landscape. It’s the political and cultural heart of our city. You can explore the grounds, take in the views, or spot a political celebrity. And it’s the place to be for Canada Day — along with a hundred thousand of your closest friends!
“The Sens!”
Do you love hockey? So does Ottawa! The Ottawa Senators serve up fast-paced hockey, cheered on by a passionate Sens Army. Even if you don’t have a Sens jersey, you’ll still fit right in. Don’t forget to check out our junior hockey team (Ottawa 67s) or our CFL team (Ottawa Redblacks) over at Lansdowne Park. We have great pro soccer and baseball, too! Watch for discount student tickets and get into the games.
“Winterlude!!!”
The annual Winterlude festival is a great excuse to throw on your parka! Canadian entertainers and DJs warm up the crowds at amazing outdoor venues. The Crystal Garden features jaw-dropping ice sculptures carved by award-winning artists from around the world. The Snowflake Kingdom is a winter playground with snow slides, tubing, and more. And don’t forget the Rideau Canal Skateway — the world’s largest naturally frozen ice skating rink (with Beavertail pastry stops along the way — yum!). It’s so much fun, you’ll forget about the cold.
“Algonquin College”
We couldn’t make this one up! Over and over, our students kept mentioning Algonquin College as one of their favorite Ottawa things. We’re flattered!
