My Social
Social well-being is an end state in which basic human needs are met and people are able to coexist peacefully in communities with opportunities for advancement. At Algonquin, we strive to aim beyond coexistence. Social wellness is having positive interactions and enjoying being with others. It is having comfort and ease during work and leisure situations and communicating feelings and needs to others. It involves developing and building close friendships and intimacy, practicing empathy and effective listening, caring for others and for the common good, and allowing others to care for you. It is recognizing the need for leisure and recreation and budgeting time for those activities. Below are a list of resources and services that Algonquin College and its partners provide to employees.
Chatter
Built on the Salesforce1 Platform, Chatter is the enterprise social network that allows teams to take action and sync up like never before. See how much more you can get done when you can create custom actions and deploy instantly to every desktop and device, and access any app from the social feed.
Get in touch with Laura Cambell for more information on how to join Chatter!
Play At Work
Getting involved in the workplace is one way to maintain a friendly and fun atmosphere.
- Random Acts of Kindness: send a positive email thanking somebody in your social or professional network for something they did out of goodwill.
- Organize a board game competition during lunch breaks! Who doesn’t love a quick round of scrabble?
- 3 Gratitudes a day: Identify 3 things you are thankful for everyday. At the end of the month, read them and realize how lucky you are.
- Professional Development Sessions: PD sessions don’t have to be all work and no play! Take a session that isn’t part of your day-to-day work life. Register on the COL site.
- Place a penny/dollar jar somewhere in the office with high traffic! Once you’ve collected enough, treat everyone for coffee! (or purchase a group lottery ticket!)
Social Events
The college hosts a number of social events throughout the year for its employees from themed President’s Coffee Breaks to President’s Breakfasts. Keep yourself updated on these great events by constantly checking MyAlgonquin.
Volunteerism
With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you and those around you. Not only can volunteering help you make new friends and increases your social skills, but also increases self-confidence, combats depression and helps you stay physically healthy. Algonquin College has a few ways to increase volunteerism. Visit the Community Services page for more details.
