This Ontario College Graduate Certificate program prepares you for a career in the field of Therapeutic Recreation. Therapeutic Recreation Specialists work with individuals who, due to illness, disability or other life circumstances require assistance to meet their individual goals and dreams. In this program, you develop a strong foundation of skills and knowledge to facilitate purposeful, quality leisure experiences. You use the tools of recreation and leisure to provide client centred, strengths-based therapeutic recreation services, which lead to happiness, well-being and quality of life.
Develop advanced knowledge of how to complete participant assessments, create individualized and group programs and document participant outcomes. Apply a variety of facilitative techniques to promote inclusive and meaningful recreation and leisure experiences, and advocate for participants across a variety of service settings to maximize environmental resources that are essential for well-being. Through collaboration, teamwork, research and professional involvement, you learn to adapt, implement and evaluate recreation activities to meet the needs of people in a wide range of settings. Develop your professional identity and goals to prepare you for placement and employment, which may include private practice. Your placement consolidates the skills and learning that you have attained throughout your coursework.
Graduates may work with people of all abilities that may include physical or developmental disabilities, seniors, children with diverse learning needs, youth at risk, as well as individuals with addictions, mental illness or head injuries. Specifically, you may find work in recreation, health or social service organizations such as:

Courses
Programs at Algonquin College are delivered using a variety of instruction modes. Courses may be offered in the classroom or lab, entirely online, or in a hybrid mode which combines classroom sessions with virtual learning activities. Graduates may find employment as recreational therapists, recreation/restorative aides, recreationalists, activation therapists, recreation program coordinators, recreation facilitators, recreation programmers, recreation assistants, therapeutic recreation coordinators and community program facilitators.

Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Provide for the safety of clients, self and others in compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, standards and ethical practices.
- Assess individual needs, strengths, challenges and interests of people experiencing barriers to healthy leisure lifestyle in order to assist them in meeting their goals.
- Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with ministry guidelines, professional standards of practice and organizational policies and procedures.
- Plan, implement and evaluate holistic individual and group recreation therapy programs which respond to identified needs, align with assessment results and adhere to current best practices.
- Provide individual and family therapeutic functional intervention, leisure education support, and opportunity for recreation participation.
- Research, analyze and evaluate recreation therapy activities and programs using evidence based practices.
- Plan, implement and evaluate community, private and institutional programs and/or services and processes to enhance quality of life for clients.
- Collaborate with individuals, caregivers, interprofessional teams, volunteers and community service providers using a person-centered approach to promote personal, social, economic and the health-related benefits of recreation therapy services.

Admissions Requirements
Program Eligibility
- Ontario College Diploma, Ontario College Advanced Diploma, Degree or equivalent credential in a health-related or human services field.
- Applicants with international transcripts must provide proof of the subject-specific requirements noted above and may be required to provide proof of language proficiency. Domestic applicants with international transcripts must be evaluated through the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS) or World Education Services (WES).
- IELTS-International English Language Testing Service (Academic)
Overall band of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each band; OR TOEFL-Internet-based (iBT)-overall 88, with a minimum in each component: Reading 22; Listening 22; Speaking 22; Writing 22; OR Duolingo English Test (DET) Overall 120, minimum of 120 in Literacy and no score below 105.
Field Placement Eligibility:
Field placements occur in the spring/summer semester of the program.
Clinical Placements require Health and Safety, and WHMIS training, provided through Algonquin College. Some agencies may require de-escalation training prior to placements. There may be additional costs associated with training that should be anticipated by students which are not covered by tuition fees.
To be eligible for placement, you must submit proof of Standard First Aid certification, CPR level C (1-year), PRCSVS, complete immunizations and other forms at least one semester prior to starting placement through ParaMed and pay associated costs. ParaMed services are the third-party provider who collects all field placement documentation for the School of Wellness, Public Safety, and Community Studies.

Kayla Sparling
Program Coordinator
Kayla Sparling is the National Director of Recreation and Rehabilitation at Extendicare, where she oversees the development and delivery of innovative, resident-centered recreational and therapeutic programs across the organization. With extensive experience in senior care and therapeutic recreation, she ensures operational excellence, compliance, and continuous improvement in the Recreation and Rehabilitation programs. Kayla leads managers, therapists, and other team members, guiding them in best practices and enhancing resident satisfaction through strategic program development and evidence-based interventions. As a Part-Time Faculty member since 2019, she also shapes the next generation of therapeutic recreation professionals by delivering course material in alignment with industry standards. With a background in recreation/gerontology and a passion for improving the quality of life for seniors, Kayla combines hands-on experience with leadership in the aging and healthcare sector.
Tania Silletta
Professor
After completing her Bachelor’s degree with specialization in Therapeutic Recreation from Concordia University in 2010, along with a variety of other sports and fitness certifications, Tania has since gained great experience in helping individuals reach their health goals and therefore enhancing their overall quality of life by offering accessible and inclusive fitness and recreation opportunities to all. She has experienced with various populations, from older adults living in long term care facilities to grassroots para-sport programs, to pediatrics palliative care as well as serving families in community-based resource centers.
More recently a Therapeutic Recreation entrepreneur, Tania founded a private practice, Bloom Therapeutic Recreation & Fitness inc., in 2018 out of passion for inclusion and accessibility in sports and recreation. Bloom currently serves a variety of populations such as older adults, post-stroke patients, youth and adults living with acquired brain injuries (ABI) and intellectual disabilities as well as developmental delays while consulting in TR development and leisure education for the general public and various non-profit and community organizations. Tania was selected for the Minister’s Award of Excellence for her work in the Therapeutic Recreation (TR) graduate certificate program.
Jennifer Sterne
Professor

Jennifer began at Algonquin College in 2000 and has her Master of Health Studies and Education, BAH in Psychology, and Recreation Therapy Graduate Certificate receiving the Highest Academic and Community Contribution awards. Jennifer was a manager with the City of Ottawa Inclusive Recreation, offered Therapeutic Recreation (TR) support in group homes, supported independent living with her TR private practice, and fostered TR community life skill development.
In 2018 Jennifer developed the Therapeutic Recreation Graduate Certificate. Jennifer was nominated for the Diane Bloor Part-time Faculty Achievement Award with a passion for creating positive learning environments and student engagement in her dozen courses developed and taught.
For 25 years, Jennifer has been an active member of Therapeutic Recreation Ontario and a volunteer for the local chapter. As the Membership Coordinator for the 2018 TRO Conference in Ottawa, this team coordinated and hosted over 300 delegates.
Ashley Hilliard
Professor
Ashley Hilliard has over 10 years of experience working in Therapeutic Recreation in the Ottawa area. Ashley has worked primarily with children and youth with disabilities including autism in a community rehabilitation setting. Ashley also has some experience working with older adults in long term care and adults with brain injuries. Ashley graduated from the Educational Assistant program at Fleming College, completed a Bachelors of Arts in Women Studies from Trent university and went on to earn a post graduate certificate in Therapeutic Recreation from Georgian college. Ashley assisted with develop and design of the Therapeutic Recreation Post grad program and thoroughly enjoys the time she spends teaching students in the program. In her Leisure time Ashley enjoys traveling, spending time with her husband and cats, being a Girl Guide leader, and completing Arts and Crafts activities.
