Who should apply for this program?

If you have an interest in working with children or adults with disabilities then this might be the program for you. Graduates work with people of all ages, with varying degrees of disabilities, in a variety of settings.

How many people are accepted into the program each September?

Our first year enrolment is around 138 students.

What are the additional certifications/training offered in the Developmental Services Worker Program?

The additional certifications/training attained in the program are Workplace Safety Training, WHMIS,
Medication Administration Training, Quality Assurance Measures Certification, Sign Language, and Behaviour Management Systems (BMS).

What field placements are included in the program?

The DSW program provides students with experiences in five different placement settings. Students participate in field placements for 2 days/week in the second semester of the program, and 3 days/week for the whole second year of the program.

Can you get a job in the field while you are in the program?

Many DSW students do choose to work in the field while completing the program. Annually the programs host a job fair on campus where 30-35 potential employers regularly participate. Job opportunities are regularly posted for students by the program.

What kinds of career opportunities are available when you graduate?

Graduates of the program may find employment in a variety of roles such as: educational assistant, developmental assistant, special needs worker, residential counsellor, employment specialist, life skills instructor, job coach, vocational instructor, and family support worker. Work settings include elementary and secondary schools, private homes, recreation programs, community residences, adult life skills programs, and local businesses, agencies, and associations.

I am interested in transferring credits from this diploma program to a university. Are there any transfer agreements in place?

Articulation agreements are available for you should you decide to continue your studies.
