Student Experience
Combines theory with practical experience
The Child and Youth Care program at Algonquin College has an established reputation in the community, and a 35+ year history with our community partners. Students learn a sound theoretical introduction to working with child and youth, complemented by practical experience in the field.
Interactive classes promote learning
Interactive classes help students to integrate theory with practice. Students benefit from case studies, role playing, therapeutic activities and programs, social campaigns, guest speakers, counselling labs, online teaching tools, and interviewing skills.
Gain real-world experience
In year two and three of the program students are on campus taking theory classes two days a week. The other three days a week, students are in the community attending field placement. Each field placement includes 1200 hours of field experience exposing you to various areas in the field and helping you to determine your preferred work environment.
Participate in outdoor activities courses
This program is the only program in Ontario to offer two courses in therapeutic outdoor activity interventions, a fall and winter camping experience.
