Mamidosewin Centre marks Have a Heart Day

The Mamidosewin Centre was spreading love and information on Valentine’s Day as it brought attention to the rights of First Nations children in Canada, particularly on access to proper health care, education and safe homes.
Have a Heart Day is marked on Feb. 14 each year to coincide with Valentine’s Day, encouraging people to “have a heart” for the wellbeing of Indigenous youth.
Created by the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada in 2012, the Canadian charity works to ensure the safety and wellbeing of First Nations youth and their families.
For those looking to send a valentine, paper hearts were available to attendees to send a “letter” or “card” to the prime minister (PM) or their local member of parliament (MP), encouraging government support for Indigenous youth. Some attendees were surprised to learn that mail can be sent postage free to the PM and any MP at the following addresses:
Office of the Prime Minister
80 Wellington Street
Ottawa, ON

Name of MP
House of Commons
Ottawa, ON
