Algonquins of Pikwakangan flag raised at Pembroke Campus by President Brulé

President Claude Brule raises the flag

On a bright and hot sunny day along the shores of the Ottawa River, a light breeze unfurled the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan flag after it was raised by Algonquin College President Claude Brulé at the Pembroke Waterfront Campus. President Brulé called it a historic day as he spoke to college employees, members of the Pikwakanagan community and special guests who gathered around the flag pole to watch the flag raising.

Pikwakanagan councillor Sherry Kohoko was very pleased to attend the ceremony stating, “It is wonderful to see the acknowledgement and respect the college is showing for our community.”

Prior to the flag raising, campus Elder Aimee Bailey offered smudging to the guests as people gathered in a circle and listened to drumming led by Elder Barry Sarazin. Following the ceremony, guests gathered in the Commons for three sisters soup. The flag will continue to fly at the campus moving forward.
