Algonquin College hosts fourth annual Round Dance & Indigenous Vendor Fair

On Friday, March 21, Algonquin College hosted our fourth Annual Round Dance, presented by the Mamidosewin Centre, with the support ofRound dance and Indigenous fair in old Algonquin College gym the Algonquin Students’ Association.

This year’s event was the largest event yet, taking place in the ARC Varsity gym. Over the course of the evening, we hosted over 300 attendees from both the Algonquin College community and general public, as well as 20 Indigenous artisans who participated in our market.

The Round Dance is a traditional Indigenous cultural ceremony that takes place throughout many different tribes across Turtle Island. It is traditionally held to honour our ancestors and those who have passed away. While the meaning of the ceremony may seem solemn – Round Dances are often large, family-friendly community events. Holding this event on campus celebrates and honours our Indigenous students and provides an opportunity for non-Indigenous members of the community to learn more. Our first Algonquin College Round Dance was held in 2019.

The Mamidosewin Centre would like to extend a “Miigwetch” to our student and employee volunteers, as well as the various departments that made this event possible, including the Volunteer Centre, Facilities, Finance, Business Operations, Shipping & Receiving, Student Support Services, Communications, Risk Management departments and more.

If you have any questions about the Round Dance or how to get involved, please reach out to Summer Wabasse, Events & Communications Officer at the Mamidosewin Centre: wabasss@algonquincollege.com.
