Algonquin College President and CEO, Claude Brulé, welcomed everyone to Algonquin College’s Indigenous Learning Commons (Nawapon) to celebrate the day.

“As a college, we are committed to respecting the heritage of the Algonquin Peoples and integrating Indigenous values in our day-to-day operations,” he said. “Today, we are taking another step forward in our journey of Truth and Reconciliation by acknowledging the importance of this day and these discussions.”

Attendees watched a Learning and Teaching Services video in which an Indigenous pedagogy curriculum consultant encouraged attendees to “think about how we benefit from the Algonquin territory’s resources”.

Algonquin College Board of Governors member Audrey Lawrence facilitated a discussion asking participants to pose questions and share information about things they would like to learn in relation to Indigenous issues and traditions. This led to breakout groups where participants had the opportunity to discuss the College’s ongoing work on Indigenization and how that work can be further shared with learners and employees.
