Office Resource: Less Waste at Lunch

I’ll have that ‘for here‘.” is the easy way to a “litterless lunch” at Algonquin College.

Here are some quick tips to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill, as well as the use of resources from our daily visits to MarketPlace Food Court at Algonquin’s Ottawa campus.

Step 1: When ordering your food, be sure to say, “I’ll have that ‘for here‘”. The MarketPlace team members will be able to serve your meal on a reusable plate. If there are no reusable plates at your food service outlet of choice, just stop over at the Chef’s Choice to pick up your reusable plate.

Step 2: Use the reusable cutlery in the Staff Dining Lounge (no need to pick up plastic cutlery in the check-out line).

Step 3: Take out only the number of paper napkins you require (yes, these napkins are produced from recycled paper!)

Step 4: Return your reusable plate and cutlery to the tray racks.

Extra Tip!

Did you know?

Cold water is available in MarketPlace too! Just press the “water” button on the fountain drink machine and “voila”! (no plastic straws, cups or plastic lids required!) Bring your reusable bottle or use one of the glasses available.

Ideas Corner: Recycle Whiteboard Markers & Pens

Reduce waste!

Recycle your used whiteboard markers and other writing utensils on campus.

Around the Ottawa campus, employees have set up drop off points for used whiteboard markers and other writing utensils.

Employees can drop these off at the various locations, or send them via internal mail.

Collection points:

CA524 (ACCE Building, Ottawa campus) Drop off times: Weekdays 7:30 am – 4:30 pm

T 107 (T Building) Drop off times: Weekdays 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

The used writing utensils recycled through the Staples / TerraCycle recycling program.

Employees interested in helping out with this program are encouraged to contact the members of the employee sustainability action team, See Earth Action Team for Sustainability (SEATS).

Collection boxes for dry whiteboard markers, pens and other office supplies can easily be set up at various locations around Algonquin College campuses to keep even more waste from the landfill.
