Sustainability

In a world that is threatened by environmental degradation, social unrest and economic uncertainty, Algonquin College strives to incorporate environmental, social and economic sustainability in its teaching, research, operations and outreach. Our strategy is not just to survive but to thrive.

As an institution of higher education, Algonquin College has a corporate social responsibility to educate our future leaders on sustainability. Part of that strategy encompasses creating sustainable campus development plans.

The Student Commons project is built according to the standards set out by the Canada Green Building Council’s LEED-Gold certification. The design of the building aims to capitalize on natural light and will attempt to “bring the outdoors in”, ensuring a ‘green’ theme.

The building was designed to complement the existing features on campus, while also delivering upon the College’s commitment to sustainability. The facility uses high performance building materials and practices to achieve one of the highest levels of sustainability certification in Canada.

The multi-storey design of the building capitalizes on natural lighting and ‘greening’ of the adjacent landscape to bring the outdoors inside.
