Frequently asked questions for GIS

My degree didn’t include any geography – what does a “related field” mean?

A great many fields use GIS skills and technology, so a background in geography or information technology is not required. We look for a degree or diploma in a field that typically uses GIS technology. If your background is not an obviously related field, you should speak with the program coordinator to understand your fit for the program.

I have never done any computer programming – will that be a serious problem?

No, this should not be a problem, since the program starts with the fundamentals of computer programming. There is at least one course during each semester that involves programming, so previous programming experience is a definite asset. Any student with a logical thought process can successfully learn the material.
