Student Experience
What to Expect
Students in the Biotechnology-Advanced program at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Canada are on the cutting edge of technology and science as they explore the ways biotechnology is improving quality of life through breakthroughs in health care, pharmaceutical, agriculture, industrial and environmental fields. In addition to theory, students receive extensive hands-on training in genetic transformations, plant tissue culture, protein chemistry, HPLC, GC, GC/MS, FT-IR, PCR and Q-PCR. They also receive training in basic animal handling, injection procedures and animal husbandry.
Partner with local industry on group projects: This program offers students unique opportunities to partner with local industry during their third year. Through the “Innovations in Research and Development” and the “Project Incubation” courses, students work in small groups on Applied Research Projects, where they plan, execute, and present collaborative research projects generated by industry, the department faculty, or the student.
