MAY 27, 2015
Congratulations to Craig Labute, who placed second overall in the third round of Cisco’s Networking Academy NetRiders USA and Canada 2015 CCNA Competition!

Cisco Networking Academy NetRiders competitions utilize Cisco’s Web technologies to create an interactive networking skills contest that enhances classroom learning, unites students from across the world, and promotes further technology education and training.

Organized by Cisco, these competitions are a great opportunity for Networking Academy students to learn valuable Networking/IT skills through a series of online exams and simulation activities. This third round of the competition wrapped up last week.

For taking home the second spot, Craig wins a Study Trip Prize to Cisco Headquarters January 10-16, 2016, and either a CCNA Routing & Switching or CCNA Security certification voucher – his choice. Way to go!

Computer Systems Technician and Bachelor of Information Technology – Networking programs to embed Aruba Networks Content

The Computer Systems Technician and Bachelor of Information Technology – Network Technology programs will be incorporating Aruba Networks content into their Wireless Networking courses beginning this fall, following the signing of an agreement with the networking company.
The Aruba Mobility Academy is the world’s first accredited mobility education program designed for universities and colleges. Mobility is one of the fastest-growing networking technologies, with wireless traffic expected to exceed wired traffic by the end of 2015. The Aruba Mobility Academy enables students who want to become Mobility Engineers to build secure, scalable and reliable enterprise-class WLANs. It is taught in a vendor-agnostic fashion while leveraging Aruba Networks products for the hands-on learning labs.
Another great learning opportunity for our students!

(Ottawa, November 10, 2014) At the launch of the headquarters for the Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks (CENGN), Algonquin College was announced as one of the founding members of CENGN. Algonquin College has been involved as a key player in establishing CENGN for the past two years – from the concept and proposal preparation, to winning the bid, and now to CENGN’s launch.
“Algonquin College is proud to be a founding member of CENGN,” says Claude Brulé, Vice President Academic, Algonquin College. “This innovative centre will create additional hands-on learning and research opportunities for our students, and new opportunities for research and collaboration between the College and industry.”
CENGN is a consortium of industry, academia and research institutes dedicated to accelerating the commercialization of next generation communications solutions. CENGN will help bridge the gap between research and commercialization – a key component to building successful startup companies. CENGN members are collaborating to lower the barrier to entry for small and medium companies and researchers.
CENGN is an Ottawa-based not-for-profit that aims to ensure Canada maintains its position as a world leader in next generation network technologies. It has acquired $11.7 million over five years in federal government funding and will be receiving contributions from industry (cash & in-kind contribution) and from the academia (in-kind contribution) with a total of $54.7 million.
The College is a CENGN academic partner and will conduct collaborative research with industry in next generation communications. The Ciena Optophotonics lab at Algonquin College will be connected to CENGN’s testbed with the aim of accelerating research to commercialization.
“CENGN will establish Canada as a global leader in the commercialization of the technologies that will underpin the next generation of converged global communication networks,” says Professor Dr. Wahab Almuhtadi, Algonquin College representative at CENGN. “The College will make a difference in conducting applied research and providing high qualified faculty and students who will help industry from conducting research to commercialization.”

Bachelor of Information Technology–Network Technology student place in the Top Three for Cisco’s annual NetRiders Competition

For the second time in a little over two years, an Algonquin Bachelor of Information Technology – Network Technology (BIT-NET) student has placed in the Top Three for Cisco’s annual “NetRiders Competition”.

Cisco’s Academy Networking program has over one million registered users spread across the globe. Each year, to foster students taking their courses, Cisco sponsors a “NetRiders” competition. The globe is split into Four Zones, with the top four competitors in each zone earning a one week all-expenses-paid trip to corporate HQ in San Jose.

Our top student this year is Phil Vatcher, a 3rd year BIT-NET student.

Having earned his place during the elimination round in March against over 1700 competitors, Phil advanced and competed against 102 other finalists from North America during the second round on Thu May 2. After four hours and two grueling exams, Phil won second place in Canada and third in North America. He’ll be heading to San Jose in Jan 2015, to meet Cisco engineers and top executives, tour the Cisco campus, and enjoy numerous other sight-seeing trips in the area. Another of our BIT-Net students advanced to Round Two, but was unable to participate due to other commitments. Jacob Stec. also a 3rd yr BIT-NET was the other student who was successful in Round One and gained a spot among the 102 students in Round Two.

Our congratulations go to Phil, and the faculty in the BIT-Net Program for their role in producing and supporting our top-notch, globally acclaimed students.
