Apply for Your Co-Op/Internship Work Permit

Most academic programs have a mandatory work requirement. This work might be paid or unpaid, full-time or part-time, on-campus or off-campus. If your letter of acceptance states you have a mandatory work requirement, you must apply for a Co-op/Internship Work Permit in addition to your Study Permit.

The letter of acceptance will indicate “Work Experience” and either “Paid”, “Unpaid” or “None”. If it indicates “None”, you do not need to apply for the Co-op/Internship Work Permit.

The Co-op/Internship Work Permit is issued for the purpose of all paid and unpaid work and work-integrated learning that is part of your academic program only. International students are required to apply for the Co-op/Internship Work Permit to begin the work requirement that is part of their academic program. The permit is free but necessary.

Examples of work requirements include:

Practicums Industry Projects Applied Research
Volunteering Work Placements Internships
Field Placement Work Experience Hours Co-operative Education

If you have a mandatory work requirement, this doesn’t necessarily mean your program is a co-op program. Visit the program webpage for more information about the mandatory work requirement in your program. Only the following Algonquin College programs include a co-op placement.
