International Advanced Standing Request

Advanced Standing and International Students

International applicants with successfully completed and relevant post-secondary education may apply for advanced standing into their program. This means that an International applicant, who receives exemptions in their advanced standing application, could enter a program beyond level 01 and complete their credential in a shorter amount of time.

Advanced Standing and Post Graduate Work Permit Eligibility

International applicants that are accepted into an advanced level of a program may reduce the length of their program duration. Consequently, this may also reduce the length of the Post Graduate Work Permit that they may be eligible for, if applicable. For more information regarding Post Graduate Work Permit Eligibility, see the IRCC website.

All questions regarding the Study Permit or Post Graduate Work Permit application process should be directed to the International Education Centre of Algonquin College at international@algonquincollege.com. Questions may also be presented to the IRCC directly. Contact IRCC.

How do I apply for Advanced Standing as an International Applicant?

The first step to applying for internal or external advanced standing (information on internal and external advanced standing is below) is to complete an application through the International Application portal. Please select your applicable program choice and submit your application. Once you have done this, please indicate in the application portal chat feed that you would like to apply for advanced standing. Depending on whether you are applying for internal or external advanced standing, please review the information below for your next steps.

Applying for Advanced Standing Based on Internal Credits from Algonquin College

When applying for advanced standing to a program based on post-secondary studies that you already completed at Algonquin College, please submit a completed Internal Advanced Standing form for International applicants.

Applying for Advanced Standing Based on External Credits from another Post-Secondary Institution

To complete your external advanced standing application, you must submit all of the following items in your advanced standing package:

  1. Post-secondary transcript(s). Algonquin College is an English, post-secondary institution. As a result, all international or domestic post-secondary transcripts submitted for review must be translated into English.
  2. A completed External Advanced Standing form for International applicants. Please review the application and ensure you have everything you need.
  3. Course outlines from all courses you wish to transfer. (Course descriptions will not suffice for this application. Official course outlines including course learning requirements and a detailed syllabus are required.)
  4. $50 advanced standing processing fee. The most convenient way for an international application to pay this fee is by credit card via your ACSIS account. All payment options can be seen here. You will need your student number when logging into ACSIS and/or making a payment, (please contact us in the application portal if you do not know your student number).

Official Transcripts may be submitted through the international application portal or included with your complete advanced standing application.

Once the completed application has been received by the Advanced Standing team, it will be sent to the Academic area for review. The processing time for advanced standing applications is 4-6 weeks. Once a decision has been made you will be notified in the application portal or via email as applicable.
