What is a simulation and how will it be used for learning the new Student Information System?

Software simulation

During the December 8 Showcase event, a software simulation was run to highlight it as a part of the eLearning approach for SIS training.

So, what is a simulation?

A Simulation is the technique of providing an interactive environment that represents the Student Information System (SIS), where users can practice tasks and workflows at any time. Users are able to access the demonstration at any time and exercise practical knowledge, without the need to maintain a training environment.

How are they being created?

Simulations are created using an authoring tool such as Adobe Captivate. The tool captures a live workflow of a task or process being completed by a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the system. Following this, eLearning content is created that allows users to click through a simulated SIS environment to work through a business process workflow, practice the completion of a specific task or demonstrate knowledge of a process.

Using tools like Adobe Captivate helps us to experiment, play with different scenarios in a safe learning environment and make accurate predictions of the next steps of the processes, based on these scenarios provided.

Why are we using simulations?

The focus on eLearning and software simulation is from an adult learning and Universal Design perspective for employees. It puts users at the center of the training approach and provides them with flexibility as to how and when they complete training. This approach also considers the reality of the day-to-day work responsibilities of AC employees so that they will be able to complete training when they are ready, when they have the time, when the need arises, or when it is convenient for them.

The benefit of providing simulations gives us a way of running real-world scenarios of the Student Information System. This approach can be applicable for both Core and General Users either in real-time, facilitated classroom settings or as part of the onboarding when it comes to training.
