Defining the R3 Team: Who are they and what do they do?

Since we’re hoping to accomplish a lot with the R3 Project, there are a number of people—from Algonquin College employees to contractors—working on this Project to help bring our vision to life. Each member of the R3 Team plays a vital role in ensuring that our five main objectives are met and that we’re always keeping the Algonquin College community in mind.

The R3 Project is comprised of several teams, and each one contributes something different to the Project. These teams are divided into smaller groups, and each one is in charge of accomplishing different tasks and working on different things.

For now, we’re going to be focusing on the two biggest teams on the R3 Project: Functional and Technical. These two teams are also led by the two co-chairs of the Implementation Committee, Bryan Eburne and Jason Taker.

Now, what does this mean? What do these teams do? How does their work affect the R3 Project and AC community?

We’ll answer all of these questions by explaining the differences between the Technical and Functional teams and outlining their roles within the Project.

The role of the Functional team

Within the Functional team are two groups: The Data team and the Student Information System (SIS) Implementation team.

The Data team is comprised of a Project Manager, Data Analysts, a Business Analyst and a Data Migration Specialist. They’re responsible for moving the information housed in GeneSIS over to the new SIS, Thesis Student Management (Thesis SM).

Throughout this process, the Data team will ensure the information that’s migrated over to the new SIS is accurate, reliable and secure. These efforts will also enhance the student and employee experience when it comes to accessing customized information and running reports and analytics.

The SIS Implementation team is comprised of a Project Manager, a Senior Testing Lead, Business Analysts, Business Systems Analysts, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), a Solution Architect and a Principle Consultant.

Both of these groups work closely together on a regular basis to share updates and provide any important information.

The role of the Technical team

Within the Technical team are two groups: The Identity and Access Management (IAM) and Security team and the Integrations and Technical Architecture team.

The IAM and Security team is comprised of a Project Manager, a Security and Compliance Administrator, a Senior Security Analyst, a Business Analyst and a Security Specialist. They take care of improving the security of our systems, such as incorporating Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

The Integrations and Technical Architecture team is comprised of a Project Manager, a few Architects, and a number of GeneSIS Developers. These employees are GeneSIS experts who provide invaluable insight and ideas as we transition from GeneSIS to Thesis SM.

These two teams also work together to ensure that any important updates or additional information is communicated.

Functional team vs. Technical team

As the names suggest, one team is more focused on the functional side of things, while the other team works on the technical aspects of the R3 Project.

The Data team and SIS Implementation team are working to make the new SIS functional for the AC community. This can be accomplished by transferring the information from GeneSIS to the new SIS and ensuring that the new SIS is being implemented to suit our needs.

As for the IAM and Security team and Integrations and Technical Architecture team, they’re in charge of all technical aspects of the Project, including security and integrations. These things are essential to ensuring our new SIS is safe and functional for employees and students.

These four teams—as well as all the other teams working on the R3 Project—are all working to rethink how we work, redesign our processes, and reimagine how we serve and interact with our learners. We’re excited for what the future holds!
