Community Round Dance for Wellness

Jan 27, 2020 |16:00-22:00

Algonquin College welcomes the community to gather in Ceremony and kick off Mental Health Awareness Week.

Pipe Ceremony • 4pm – 5pm

Round Dance & Feast • 5pm – 10pm

Please consider bringing feast food to share or donations to the Algonquin Students’ Association Food Cupboard.

Round Dance is one of the oldest ceremonies and is a feast for the dead. This is the one time our Creator allows our passed loved ones come to eat and dance with us.

The Pipe Ceremony and Feast is the most important piece of the Round Dance. This occurs at the beginning of the Round Dance. Once we have feasted, our Ancestors and those in attendance join in a Round Dance!

Throughout the evening, many different songs will be shared from many different singers. When we dance together to each song, our Ancestors are dancing with us. There will also be protocol songs that will occur during the evening, such as; the Drum Song, Welcoming Song, Chief & Council songs, Giveaway song, Going Home song and so forth.

An Evening Snack will also occur and during this time teachings are shared.
