Gerry Barker

Gerry joined Algonquin College in 1999. During his 16-year tenure served as part-time faculty, academic chair of the Police Foundations program, academic dean of the Police and Public Safety Institute and executive dean of the School of Public Health & Community Studies. Gerry became the vice president of Human Resources in 2008 and held this position until his retirement in 2015.

Peter Lajeunesse

Gary Gin

It is with great sadness we share the news of the passing of Gary Gin. Gary has worked at the College since 2000.

Claudine Marcella Wilson

Claudine taught advertising at Algonquin College before founding the Public Relations program in 1984, where she worked for more than 30 years.

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024. Further information can be found in Claudine’s obituary.

Terry Graham

Terry was an employee of the Pembroke Campus for almost 30 years, working in the ITS department. Terry was also an active OPSEU union steward for the campus, providing leadership and support to Support Staff.

Steve Neumann

Steve was a professor and program coordinator in ACCE and worked at Algonquin College since 2001.

Erin Langevin

Erin was the Director, Employee and Labour Relations and had worked at Algonquin College since 2017.

Susan joined the College in 2015 and was Events Manager in the President’s Office.

Micheal Kelly

Micheal was a professor and at the College from 1969 to his retirement in 1997. He was previously chair of Visual Arts, Woodworking.

Wilma Fraser

Wilma was a professor at the College in Career and College Preparation (now Upgrading) from 1989 until her retirement in 2009.

Ron Cormack

A long time television and broadcasting professor (retired 2017) passed away. Ron Cormack was a very influential person in the Ottawa broadcasting landscape.

He has received a lifetime achievement award from the Broadcast Educators of Canada and another from Algonquin College.

Denis Cinnamon

October 18th, 1948 – December 8th, 2023

Denis worked in the Registrar’s Office from 2003 to 2018, in roles in client services, scheduling and systems support.

Gail served on the College’s Board of Governors from 1975 to 1982.

William James (Jim) Brockbank

Jim was former Chair of the College’s Board of Governors. His tenure ran from 2014 to 2020 as a Governor, Vice Chair, and ultimately as the Chair of the Board.

Cynthia Bled

March 31, 1933 – August 6, 2022

Cynthia was a former professor at the College. With her husband, Yves Bled, Cynthia established three Algonquin College bursaries that have helped 45 students in need. The bursaries will continue to be given out yearly. The bursaries support students in the Practical Nursing, Child and Youth Worker, Social Services Worker, Journalism and Broadcast Radio programs.

Kathlyn Bradshaw

July 6, 1966 – July 1, 2022

Kathlyn passed away suddenly from natural causes on Friday, July 1, 2022. Many of you will know her as a valued member of the Business Administration department, having been with the College for over a decade. Having taught at Oxford University, Queen’s University, and Carleton University, as a sought after professor, she was also a published author. She will be greatly missed by many across our institution and those who knew her throughout her distinguished career.

Rheal Monette

A longtime employee with AC’s Facilities Planning team, Rheal passed away in hospital at the age of 76 years.

Brian Kavanagh

1958 – 2021

It is with heavy hearts that the Kavanagh family announces the sudden passing of Brian on May 13, 2021.
Brian was born in Brockville, Ontario on October 8th, 1958 to Mary (Holley) and Maurice Kavanagh (predeceased). Brian grew up on a dairy farm on Kilkenney Road just outside of the village of Lyn and graduated from Thousand Islands Secondary School in Brockville and St. Lawrence College in Kingston. Brian recently retired from Algonquin College in Ottawa after 32 years of devoted service as an Instrumentation Technician. Read more here.

Dave Dutton

1951 – 2021

Dave Dutton was born Nov. 13, 1951, the oldest of three children to Gloria and Don Dutton, a National Newspaper Award-winning Toronto Star cop reporter. Dutton idolized his dad and dropped out of Don Mills Collegiate to take his first newspaper job.
“In Grade 12 he just up and quit, and went to work at the Simcoe Reformer,” Ludlow said. “He wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps.”
Dutton would spend the next half century in the news business, working for Cycle Canada magazine, the Calgary Sun, The Canadian Press and the Montreal Gazette before landing at the Citizen in 1992. Read more here.

Maryanne Mask

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the sudden passing of a long-time member of the campus community, Maryanne Mask, on Saturday, March 27th at the Pembroke Regional Hospital. Maryanne was a key member of the Dean’s Management Committee where she held the role of Manager of Administrative Services for more than 20 years. She started her career at Algonquin College when the Lorrain School of Nursing closed and nursing education was transferred to the Pembroke Campus in the mid-1970’s. Maryanne had been working at the Lorrain School, and when she moved to the College she began supporting long-time Pembroke Campus Principal Frank Havey as an administrative assistant.

Norm Wright

Norm Wright, long-time broadcaster and a co-founder of Lake 88 radio, has passed away. A Perth native, Wright had an extensive career as a radio and television broadcast professional and educator. Norm, along with partner Brian Perkin, worked for two years to secure a radio licence for Perth and area, with final CRTC approval to operate a station at 88.1 approved 15 years ago this month. Norm teamed up with news announcers Michael O’Brien and then Ian Sutton to host Lake 88’s morning show in the early days of the new station. He retired in 2014. See more here.

Douglas John Reid

1952-2020

Doug was a very loving husband to Judith (Frégeau) for 33 years, father to Patrick (Jasmine Nguyen) and Eric (Warsame Ali) and brother to Leslie Reid (George Hollinworth). He was also a great brother-in-law, never failing to support Johanne (deceased) and Martine. He will also be missed by the rest of the Frégeau family: Roch, Chantal (Rémy Aubin) and Hélène (Dominique Echeverri). You can find the full obituary here.

Dale Chimirri

1970- 2020

It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved Dale Chimirri (Ottawa, Ontario), who passed away at the age of 50, on November 15, 2020. William De Vries

1933 – 2020

William (Wybe) De Vries, 86, of Morrisburg, ON passed away peacefully on Monday, October 12, 2020 after having struggled gracefully with the effects of dementia. Bill was the beloved husband for over 61 years of Titia (née van der Veen), loving father and father-in-law of Anna De Vries and Karl Dilcher of Halifax, Kathryn and Fred Vedder of Metcalfe, Duncan and Karin De Vries (née Reusser) of Finch, and Pake to 9 grandchildren and 9 great- grandchildren. Geraldine “Geri” Godin

1942 – 2020

GODIN, Geraldine “Geri” – Peacefully at the Pembroke Regional Hospital on Friday, October 30th, 2020 in her 79th year. Geri Godin of Pembroke, beloved daughter of the late Joseph Godin, and Mary (the late Willis “Bill”) Knott (nee Herbert). Dear sister of David (Sandra) Knott of Kanata and Pat (Doreen) Knott of Renfrew. Caring aunt of Jennifer Knott (Jon Hass) of Ottawa and Jeff (Suzanne) Knott of South Mountain. It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Jeannine, after a long and courageous battle with dementia. Devoted mother of Alain, loving mother-in-law of Tanya (Beimers) and extremely proud ‘grand-maman’ of Sébastien. Jeannine was predeceased by her parents Albert and Agnès (née Paquette) Vanasse. Also her brothers Hector (late Marie Lacasse), Lucien (late Georgette Gauthier) and Emile (late Rita Bélair) and sisters Juliette (late Aimé Champagne) and Thérèse. She will also be joyously welcomed by Madeleine (Tapp), her best friend from childhood. Jeannine will be greatly missed by her many lifelong friends. Peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital with his loving wife Angie by his side on Thursday October 1, 2020 at the age of 68. Dear husband of Angie Hammond. Beloved son of the late Harold and Lillian Roberts (nee Leckie). John will be fondly remembered by Amanda (Phil), Ryan, Chad, his uncle Gordon (Chum) Roberts and his many friends. It is with sadness we announce the passing of Corinne Edith Orban (nee Bott). She is survived by her mother Frances Bott, her brother Rick Bott (Lynn), sister-in-law Debbie Bott, sons Jim Orban (Connie) and Michael Orban (Christa) and her grandchildren Kaitlyn, Ryan, Tyler and Emily. Predeceased by her father John Bott, brother Don Bott and her beloved partner John Malek. She will be missed by the extended Orban, Bott and Malek families. There will be no visitation or service. Private interment at Pinecrest Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the ALS Society in memory of her brother Don, or the Ottawa Regional Cancer Center would be appreciated. April 9, 1938 – May 29, 2020

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Carl lived his early years in Etobicoke, Ontario and Oshawa, Ontario having trained and worked as a tool and die maker at General Motors. He obtained his teaching certificate at the University of Toronto and moved to Ottawa, where he first taught at South Carleton High School. He then worked many years at Algonquin College as an instructor and in management, retiring as Chairman of the Electronics Department. Carl was an inspiration to his family and many others having returned to school and completing his business degree at the University of Ottawa in his early 50s. You can read his full obituary here.

Karl Patton

Oct. 6, 1986 – June 1, 2020

Karl was the owner and principal designer at Minimist Design and previously worked in printing with the print media and graphic design department at Algonquin College. Gerald Kirby

January 23, 1937 – April 24, 2020

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Gerald immigrated with his family to Canada as a teenager. As a chartered accountant, Gerald spent most of his career teaching at Algonquin College’s School of Business. Arnold Betz

September 17, 1938 – February 25, 2020

Arnold died peacefully at his home in Ottawa in the arms of Anne with whom he was married 59 years. Arnold was a graduate of the Royal Military College (1961) and served in the RCAF. He spent most of his career in computing as a programmer, engineer, and professor. ultimately as a professor. He taught for a number of years at Algonquin College’s Computer Studies Department on the former Rideau campus. Read his obituary here.

Nicolas spent 37 years at Algonquin holding a number of positions including Professor of Economics, Director of Business Administration, Dean of the School of Technology and Trades and finally, Director of Educational Services. Read his full obituary here.

Kim Clark

February 26, 1937 – March 6, 2020

Kim graduated from the University of Toronto with a Ph.D. in mammalogy. He did extensive research on arctic wolves and taught for over 30 years at Algonquin College in Pembroke, ON. Read his full obituary here.

Gayle William Dumsday

Age 78. Passed away unexpectedly Tuesday February 18, 2020. Soulmate and best friend of his wife Judy, he was also the proud and loving father of Dylan and Travis. He was a respected psychotherapist and long-time counsellor at Algonquin College (for many years the Director of Counselling Services). Gayle is also survived by sister-in-law Sheila Leckie, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Gayle was a kind and lovely soul who never complained despite an extended period of declining health. Visitation for family and friends will take place on Sunday February 23 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Tubman Funeral Homes (403 Richmond Road). Funeral service will be held on Monday February 24 at 1:00 p.m. at Parkwood Presbyterian Church (10 Chesterton Drive).
