Building Rapport
2.2 Establishing and maintaining learning environments (classroom, online and experiential) that promote student success
Establishing and maintaining a rapport with our learners is essential for creating an engaging learning atmosphere. Here is a list of ideas to create and promote a positive learning environment in a face-to-face, hybrid or online course.
Program Orientation
The orientation model implemented at Algonquin consists of two components: AC Start (before classes start so students can “get ready”) and AC Day 1 (first day of each semester-when students “go”). For more information regarding Program Orientation, the model and resources for faculty and Program Coordinators/Orientation Leads, please visit the following site.
The First Day of Class
“The first class meeting of any course is more important than many faculty realize. It sets the tone for what is to follow and can greatly influence students’ opinion about the course and the instructor for the remainder of the semester” (Perlman & McCann, 1999, p. 277).
