We speak often of student retention and are quite proud of our student retention rates at Pembroke campus. A lot of this success is due in part to our Student Success Specialist Shelly Waplington.

From the Jedi program to Academic Upgrading to Students At Risk, Shelly consistently exemplifies the College’s values of caring, learning, integrity and respect on a daily basis.

With my office right across the hall, I have watched Shelly work with students, staff and parents over the years. Early every semester there’s a large number of students making appointment to see her and some are not too happy! By the end of a semester they are thanking her for her support in meeting with them regularly and getting them “on track” to a successful program completion.

I have watched parents and students go into her office angry and come out smiling, thanking her for her understanding and guidance and say how glad they were they came to speak with her and they want to keep in touch. It amazes me how she can turn a potentially hot-tempered situation into a clam, pleasant and informative partnership.

I have heard laughter, tears and even a few doors slam. Through it all Shelly remains positive and supportive as she walks with the students through the process of managing their college experience. She is always there to answer their questions and verify their own ongoing success.

As a colleague Shelly is loyal and supportive. I will forever be grateful for her help during a family illness last year. She stepped right in and covered my workload and kept everything on track.

They say having humor in your life is not just a matter of a good time, it’s also a matter of living longer. Shelly will live to be a hundred! Her sense of humor is boundless, her laughter loud but her singing – well……
