Scotiabank Recognition Event
The prepared remarks of President Claude Brulé.
January 31, 2020
Good morning, bonjour, kwe. It is my distinct pleasure to welcome everyone to this special event and give a warm welcome to all of our guests.
This is a very special day indeed and we are delighted that you are able to celebrate with us.
As you might know, our mission at the College is to transform hopes and dreams into lifelong success,” but we can’t do it alone.
The Scotiabank Women in Tech Award is opening doors for women wanting to begin a career in the technology sector.
Scotiabank’s commitment to women’s success in Science Technology Engineering and Math fields, known as STEM, not only helps remove financial barriers, but it provides the support they need to begin their professional journey.
As Chris alluded to, the We Saved You a Seat program is providing opportunities for women pursuing a career in the technology industry, while at the same time establishing a diverse learning environment where our learners can succeed.
With the help of Scotiabank and their leadership approach to this initiative, we are well on our way to supporting the next generation for women in STEM industries.
It goes without saying, this partnership is one we appreciate greatly – thank you.
With that, I would like to invite Laurence to join me.
Once again, Laurence, we would like to thank you for your support.
If you would, please stand by as we recognize and celebrate the first two recipients of the Scotiabank Women in Tech awards: Denise Silva and Khushbu (pronounced: khoosh-boo) Shah.
Denise, a student in the Computer Systems Technician program, discovered her passion for IT after working for a company that gave her the opportunity to explore the world of service support.
This single mother of twins is starting on this path by pursuing formal education and hopes to realize her dream of becoming an Information Technology Support Specialist.
After moving to Canada from Brazil 13 years ago, she not only had to establish herself in a new country, she had to learn English and support her family.
Despite what some may have considered considerable challenges, Denise is seizing the opportunity and is determined to be a success and a role model… And we have no doubt she will do just that.
Denise, please join us at the podium.
Page Break
Our second recipient Khushbu may attribute her parents as the source of what set her on the path to become a student in the Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technician program. After being gifted a remote-controlled plane, Khushbu’s fascination continued.
Following a degree in physics, she looked for an opportunity to pair it with something that bridged the gap between that theory and the practical uses.
She credits the Scotiabank Women in Tech Award as a way to boost morale and self-confidence. We will be keeping an eye out on how her journey unfolds and the great discoveries and innovative projects that are no doubt in her future.
Khushbu, please join us at the podium.
Once again, congratulations Denise and Khushbu. We’re so proud to recognize and celebrate you both as our first two recipients of the Scotiabank Women in Tech awards.
