What are some of the success factors for this program?
This program is well-suited for students who are physically fit, see themselves as contributing as a team member in dynamic environments, enjoy a hands-on approach to learning about the firefighter occupation, and want to make a difference in their community.
What are the approximate costs for uniforms and gear?

What parts of the uniform and equipment does the college provide?
Algonquin College will provide a Firefighter bunker coat, pants and breathing apparatus that must all be returned at the end of the program.
Is there any equipment I have to purchase on my own?
Yes. Students are required to provide the following, which can be purchased at most safety supply stores: a pair of black steel toe shoes/work boots, safety glasses, work gloves and black socks to be worn with the uniform. Students will be measured and required to purchase the remaining equipment which is yours to keep.
What is the passing grade?
70% is the passing grade in this program.
Is there any other certification that I need in order to become a firefighter in Ontario?
Yes. If you successfully complete the required components of the program you will qualify to complete a written and practical examination administered by the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal, leading to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Professional Firefighter certification for Firefighter Level I and/or II, and NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations. The testing fee is approximately $150.00, payable by the student.
