When is the program offered?
The program is offered both in the Fall and Winter semesters. Note: The Winter semester intake runs consecutively from January to April (through the summer semester).

Who is best suited for this program?
You are best suited for this program if you have effective communication skills, analytical, interpersonal and observational skills, are committed to serving the broad and diverse needs of your community, maintain a good level of physical fitness, and enjoy working as a member of a team.

Does the program require a uniform?
No, we do not have a program uniform however, guidance will be provided on appropriate wear for fitness classes.
Do you need a police records check to take the program?
No, not for the program. However, a valid and clear Police Records Check may be required for students who intend to pursue select volunteer opportunities during their program. We encourage students to apply for the Police Records check with the Vulnerable Sector prior to commencing their studies.
Do you need to volunteer above the 25 hours required in the program?
No, however, community service is what law enforcement professionals do daily. As a result, agencies seek to hire people with a willingness to serve the community. Volunteerism is an important part of a competitive applicant portfolio. Although it is not required, it is strongly encouraged.
Does this program offer a placement or coop opportunity?
No, however, students are required to complete 25 community service hours as part of PFP6000 in level 2 of the program.
What is the workload like?
The workload is equivalent to any full-time program of post-secondary study. Most classes are hybrid, which means students will spend one hour per week doing independent work outside of the classroom.

How do course exemptions work?
Course exemption requests are managed via your ACSIS account. Please consult this link and apply for exemptions as early as possible before the start of the semester.
Who is my Academic Advisor?
Each of you has access to an Academic Advisor throughout your stay at Algonquin College.
Do you need this diploma to be hired by a police agency?
Many agencies give preference to students with post-secondary education in the justice field.
This diploma is a requirement for employment with the Military Police.
What is required to be a police officer in Ontario?
Application criteria for police services in Ontario are outlined in the Community Safety Police Services Act.
Applicants must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
- Be at least 18 years of age;
- Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position;
- Be of good moral character and habits;
- A graduate of at least four years of secondary school education or its equivalent.
