Frequently asked questions for the Personal Support Worker program
What are the admission requirements for the program?
English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or equivalent). Mathematics Grade 11 or 12 (MAP4C or equivalent) and Biology Grade 11 or 12 is recommended. An understanding of Science and Anatomy is considered an asset. Upgrading in biology is available on-campus through our Academic Upgrading program.
Who do Personal Support Workers (PSW) work with?
PSWs work with a variety of people of all ages who have different abilities, including the elderly, persons with mental and/or physical disabilities, and those in respite care. PSWs also work side-by-side with Registered Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses.
How long is this certificate program?
An 8-month Ontario College Certificate program is completed in six months of studies. That means that you will start your studies in September and complete your two semesters at the end of February.
Will there be weekend or evening clinical?
Yes. As healthcare is offered 24/7 the students will work flexible shifts throughout their clinical placements and could be required to work on weekends and evenings.
Are there incentives for Personal Support Worker (PSW) graduates?
The province of Ontario is providing incentive funding to attract personal support workers (PSWs) to work in long-term care homes as well as home and community care agencies.
Available funding provides:
- up to $5,440 to PSW students as a stipend during their clinical placement in a long-term care home and/or home and community care employer;
- $10,000 to recent PSW graduates in exchange for a 12-month commitment to work in a long-term care home or for a home and community care employer; and
- an additional $10,000 to support relocation costs for those recent PSW graduates committing to work in a long-term care home or with a home and community care employer in a rural, remote, or northern area for 12 month

What are the career opportunities for a Personal Support Worker graduate?
This is an in-demand career path. Over the past several months, Bonnechere Manor as well as other healthcare providers in the region, have had difficulty filling Personal Support Worker positions. An ageing population across Ontario has put a lot of pressure on the healthcare system and PSWs are on the front line in providing support services to the elderly and adults who need personal care.

Where do PSWs work?
PSWs can find employment in retirement homes, long-term care facilities, group homes, or private residences.
What are the qualities of a good PSW?
PSWs are caring and compassionate, flexible, assertive, dedicated, patient, respectful, positive, and are able to maintain confidentiality and communicate clearly and effectively.
