Algonquin College’s Pembroke Campus offered a free post-secondary preparation course designed to support military spouses to feel more confident to pursue further education or a new career path. This course will also assist military spouses with settling into the local community.
- Free 42 hour course
- Course delivered over a 7 week period at Garrison Petawawa (6 hours per week)
- Space is limited. Maximum of 20 learners
- An opportunity to make connections with other military spouses
- Networking to learn more about the local labour market through career fairs and presentations
- Linkages to student support services staff at Algonquin College’s Pembroke Campus (Financial aid, counselling, disabilities counselling, admissions and more)
Course Description:
This course focuses on developing learning strategies and essential skills fundamental to academic and career success, specifically designed for Military Spouses who benefit from career flexibility. Special attention is placed on analyzing oneself as a learner and preparing for future personal and career goals. Students learn the importance of critical thinking, problem-solving and working in a team. The course lays the foundation for students to develop personalized learning strategies and to manage their learning in a collaborative and supportive environment through interactive workshops, discussion board activities, team presentations and journal writing.
Transition Course for Military Members
The Academic Upgrading program offered this pilot program course in the 2023-24 academic year. At present, we are seeking additional funding to continue this initiative. In the meantime, the Academic Upgrading program can support your goals and can add you to a waitlist for the future.

- Free 42-hour course focused on helping exiting military members prepare for post-secondary education
- Course delivered over a 7 week period at Algonquin College’s Pembroke Campus (6 hours per week)
- Space is limited. Maximum of 20 learners
In addition to having the support of an instructor, students will have access to all student services at the Pembroke Campus, an Academic Advisor and Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition supports.

Special attention is placed on analyzing oneself as a learner and preparing for future personal and career goals. Students learn the importance of critical thinking, problem-solving and working in a team. The course lays the foundation for students to develop personalized learning strategies and to manage their learning in a collaborative and supportive environment through interactive workshops, discussion board activities, team presentations and journal writing.
This course is designed to support military personnel who are either planning to transition out of the Canadian Armed Forces, who are already in transition to civilian life, or who have left the CAF within the last five years. The course will be of interest to those who are considering higher education as the next step in exploring and preparing for future careers. The course is open to both full-time and part-time CAF members.
