Heather Macmillan graduated cum laude from the University of Ottawa Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in 2006. As part of the new graduate initiative fund, she also completed her Critical Care Certificate through Algonquin College in 2006. Before coming to the Ottawa Valley, Heather worked at the Ottawa Civic Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and was associated with many educational and policy initiatives. After relocating to the Ottawa Valley in 2009, she worked part-time in the Emergency Department, and ICU at the Pembroke Regional Hospital. During this time, she also worked as a clinical teacher for Algonquin College, supervising students in the Personal Support Worker, Practical Nursing, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programs. Heather continues to build upon her love of teaching and is currently taking her Master’s in Nursing. Over the past year, she has worked hard at revamping the simulated nursing lab environment and has put a great deal of energy into creating real-life situations so that students may practice their skills. Heather was hired as a full-time Nursing professor and Coordinator of the PSW program in 2014. She continues to stay current with her practice through memberships in many different nursing organizations and affiliations. Heather has also developed close connections with agencies throughout the valley who continue to provide excellent learning environments for students. A major highlight of Heather’s past education was participating in a volunteer mission to Kenya, Africa, where she worked helping orphans and widows suffering from HIV/AIDS and other infectious illnesses. This experience instilled in her a more compassionate focus on nursing, as well as a deeper understanding of healthcare within our own country and abroad.
