Artifact Collections Assistant (University/College Student)

The Ottawa Valley Historical Society is seeking a motivated student to join our team as an
Artifact Collections Assistant at the Upper Ottawa Valley Heritage Centre. This position will run
from May 26, 2025, to August 29, 2025, at our community museum. Our museum, which is
rooted in its collection of artifacts, connects the history of Pembroke and the greater Upper
Ottawa Valley with contemporary life by telling engaging stories through exhibitions and
programming for all ages.

Key Responsibilities:
● Accession backlogged artifacts and prepare them for storage or display. This includes listing
artifacts in the accession register book, filling out artifact worksheets, creating physical accession
files, inputting information into the PastPerfect collections software, numbering artifacts, and
recording their locations.
● Research potential locations for outreach exhibits in the community and compile a list of possible
venues.
● Plan and create content for #WhatIsItWednesday social media posts. This includes selecting
artifacts, taking photographs, composing, and scheduling posts on Facebook and Instagram.
● Monitor temperature and humidity levels weekly in designated areas of the museum.
● Upload artifact records to the museum’s website, making them accessible online.
● Take photos and write descriptions for the 360 virtual tour featured on the museum’s website.
● Assist with providing museum tours to the public and manage the rental of Museum in a Box kits
when needed.
● Perform weekly cleaning and maintenance of the museum’s four artifact storage areas.
● Complete other duties as required.

Qualifications:
● This position is suited to a university or college student pursuing studies in community/social
fields such as Museum Studies.
● As the job involves a significant amount of computer work, the ideal candidate will have excellent
organizational skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, knowledge of digital photography, and strong
social media skills. Database entry experience is an asset.
● Ability to multitask and manage various responsibilities efficiently.
● Strong public speaking skills.
● A keen interest in history and heritage.
● Previous experience working in a museum is a plus but not necessary.
● Research skills are an asset.
● Must be a full-time student as of the spring and returning to full-time studies in the fall.
● Bilingualism is an advantage.
