Mature learner finds new career options and sense of pride with AC Online
John K is a proud graduate of AC Online’s Addictions and Mental Health program, and he’s just enrolled in Community and Justice Services program. At 53, he’s become not only an adept learner but a champion for the flexibility and autonomy of online platforms.
After working in front-line full-time developmental services in health care for 33 years, John knew he wanted a change. The pandemic pushed him to finally make a move. And when the first program he selected didn’t feel quite right, he switched to something new, finding the right fit in Addictions and Mental Health. “Absolutely loved it,” says John. “It totally suited me. And if you had told me that six months before, I would not have believed you.”
John also wobbled with the new online learning environment at the start. Again, he persevered. Now, even with the option post-pandemic to take his program in person, John opted to continue learning online. “What kept me with AC online, was the learning format of the modules. The way they were devised was extremely efficient, and I could see the methodology behind them,” he says.
He also enjoys the self-pacing and the interactivity of online learning. “There are certain benchmarks and dates, but if you organize yourself well with a semester planning system, you’ll do fine. I found that the more I put in, the more meaningful the work became. I was finally in my zone.”
The interactivity was also a highlight, from group projects to discussions. “The discussion forums in BrightSpace make you feel like you’re not alone. You have a class and people that you can talk to,” recalls John. His course facilitators also provided that sense of connectedness. “The passion of the teachers was just unparalleled. And these are obviously people who had frontline experience. I really appreciated the down-to-earth, common-sense approach, and the positivity from them was great.”
Overall, the experience has really re-energized John’s passion for work. “I did not derive a great deal of meaning in my career. I always felt I could do more. I was just going through the motions. Since taking AC Online, I am now seeking learning wherever it may come.”
That’s part of why John decided to continue his learning journey. “AC Online really sparked my love of learning again, and I had not felt that pull for a very long time. That’s why I’m taking another course in September, because I’m where I want to be, but I can see that there’s another level beyond that. That’s what I’m being pulled. The fact that I have so many options makes each day great.”
John now encourages others to try online learning, no matter their age or experience level. “Study online, even if you’re scared,” he says. “Give it a try—nothing ventured, nothing gained.” For him, the sense of fulfilment goes even beyond the completion of his diploma. “I am proud of who I have become.”
