Algonquin College announces interim smoke-free policy

President Cheryl Jensen’s message to College community on Oct. 5, 2018:

Good afternoon,

As you know, I recently announced that we would begin College-wide consultations about moving toward smoke-free campuses in Ottawa, Perth and Pembroke.

We will be launching consultations very soon, but I wanted to update you on a change of plans we are implementing as a result of the recent Ontario Government introduction of Bill 36, Cannabis Statute Law Amendment Act, 2018 that will allow cannabis smoking wherever tobacco is permitted.

We will have a new interim policy that will be in place from Oct. 15, 2018 until Jan. 1, 2019. During this time, our campuses will be smoke-free and we will conduct full consultations to understand the potential impact and develop a permanent policy.

Residence: temporary power and Wi-Fi disruption on Monday, Sept. 24

Please be advised that Residence on Ottawa Campus will undergo a temporary power disruption Monday afternoon as power is transferred back from generators to the Ottawa Hydro grid.

The power outage will begin between 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. and power will be restored between 3:30 and 4 p.m.

Disruption to Wi-Fi in Residence is expected to begin at 2:30 p.m. will return approximately an hour after power is restored.

There will be some disruptions to power to the rest of Ottawa campus after 10 p.m. on Sept. 24. On Tuesday, Sept. 25, there will be similar disruptions as Physical Resources moves the rest of the campus back to the Ottawa Hydro grid.

Power Outage: Important resources and information for all students

In the wake of Friday’s severe storms, Algonquin College recognizes that many in our College community are coping with difficult situations.

While the balance of fees would normally be due tomorrow, the College understands that many students and their families are facing extraordinary circumstances. For this reason, we will extend the deadline by one day (and possibly longer, on a case-by-case basis).

If you have questions about your fees, or if you were affected by the storms and need support, please use the following numbers for assistance:

Power Outage Update: September 23

Please be advised that the Ottawa Campus will be open for all regularly scheduled activity, including classes, tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 24. However, due the ongoing power outages and non-functioning traffic signals caused by Friday’s severe weather events, the College recognizes that some students and employees may not be able to make it to the campus safely. We encourage everyone to put their own safety and security first.

Physical Resources crews worked through the weekend to establish temporary power supplies in many areas. Please note that the College will be working to reduce demands on our temporary power supplies. This will mean that we will not be able to run our heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems at full capacity to avoid the possibility of further power disruptions. Students and employees may notice that some areas may not have ideal temperatures. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

We want to thank everyone for their patience.
