Ottawa campus open Monday

Sunday, July 22, 2018, 2:45 p.m.

Algonquin College’s Ottawa Campus will be open for all classes and activities on Monday, July 23rd .

Crews have worked through the weekend to successfully restore power to the College. While some areas are still operating on reduced power this afternoon, all areas are expected to be at full power in time for the start of the new week. This will include areas that involve our external partners, such as the Algonquin College Early Learning Centre, Pro Physio, and the Police and Public Safety Institute.

The College is drawing power from one of its two high-efficiency co-generation natural gas plants, supplemented by generators for many of the buildings.

Power restored to parts of Ottawa campus

Saturday, July 21, 2018, 8:15 p.m.

Crews have been successful in their efforts to restore power to a large portion of the Ottawa campus. The College has been able to utilize one of its two high-efficiency co-generation natural gas plants, which together can generate enough power to cover the baseline power needs of the Ottawa campus.

As of Saturday evening, we have been able to supply power to all buildings except Buildings T, N, P and S — electrical systems for these buildings are being tested this evening and we are hopeful that power will be restored in these areas over the weekend. We do not yet have sufficient power to run the main chiller that provides cooling to most buildings, so while some buildings have full power for lighting, computers and washrooms, they do not yet have air conditioning.

Important update re power outage

Jul 21, 2018, 10:30 a.m.

Crews are continuing their work to restore power to our Ottawa Campus and we are pleased to report that last night our Residence was back to full power. Thank you to all our learners for their patience while we worked to set up generators, and to all the teams and employees who work in Residence for their ongoing support.

The ACCE Building is operating normally and all regularly scheduled activity there will continue without disruption.

We are unable to provide an ETA on the restoration of power to other parts of the Ottawa Campus, which are currently operating on emergency power.

Specialists have been brought in to further diagnose the problem and we will have another update for everyone later today. We are hopeful that we will be able to take advantage of our high-efficiency co-generation power plants, which can generate enough power to cover the baseline power needs of the Ottawa campus.

All regularly scheduled activities, programs, and services in areas of the Ottawa Campus other than ACCE Building remain suspended on Saturday and until further notice. Employees in non-essential roles are advised not to come to the campus.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your attention to this notice.

Please watch for updates on myAC and the College’s social media channels throughout the weekend

Welcome to Algonquin College’s latest showcase of Indigenous artwork. Nearly seven months in making, the three storey-high painting depicting Indigenous cosmological symbols is now on display outside the Indigenous Commons in the first floor of the DARE District.

Algonquin College investigating cybersecurity attack

OTTAWA —Algonquin College is investigating a cybersecurity incident that may affect thousands of current and former students and employees of the College.

A preliminary forensic investigation indicates one of the College’s servers was compromised by a cyber-attack. It is not yet known how many people may be affected by this data breach, though the College will provide those numbers as soon as they can be confirmed.

Algonquin College discovered the unauthorized and illegal access by hackers several weeks ago and the College acted immediately to reestablish the security of the server. The College is now in the process of a comprehensive forensic review to evaluate the scope of the breach and the kind of information that may have been compromised.

“Our first concern is for those affected,” said Algonquin College President Cheryl Jensen. “I want to let them know that we will be offering them support as we continue to investigate.”

Algonquin College has informed the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario. The College will contact those individuals affected and will be establishing a web page (algonquincollege.com/cyber) to provide more details.
