(TORONTO, Nov. 12, 2019) – The Ontario government’s new policy to expand partnership agreements between Ontario’s colleges and private trainers will bolster the province’s efforts to produce a more highly qualified workforce, Ontario’s colleges said today.
Algonquin College has received a $450,000 donation from guard.me International Insurance — the first part of a $650,000 contribution towards international education opportunities first announced in the summer.
The special, two-year investment will benefit international students in the form of new scholarships and a bursary fund, and seed funding for unique entrepreneurship and applied research initiatives. The funding will also help more domestic students study and work abroad.
“International students make significant social, economic and education contributions to Algonquin College and the Ottawa community,” said Cheryl Jensen, former Algonquin College President and Chief Executive Officer, when the funding was first announced on Friday, June 28. “This generous donation from guard.me will help support international students who have a sudden, unforeseen change in their financial situation. It will also provide our domestic students with more opportunities abroad – experience that is highly attractive to potential employers.”

This week, we heard that Ontario school districts are engaged in collective bargaining with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) union. CUPE employees will be in a position to strike as of Monday, October 7. Some parents have been informed by their boards that, should a work stoppage occur, their schools will have to close.
OTTAWA (September 26) — Algonquin College celebrates some of its most accomplished alumni at the third annual Alumni of Distinction Awards Gala on Sept. 26. The gala honours the achievements of 10 alumni and one community employer who have made distinctive contributions in their fields of endeavour and their communities.

Algonquin College has seen consistent improvement in overall student satisfaction levels, according to Provincial Key Performance Indicator (KPI) results released today across the province.
Student, graduate and employer feedback placed Algonquin at the top of the scale among large Ontario colleges – with a top-three ranking in six of nine categories.
The annual survey results, which were released by Colleges Ontario earlier today, show overall student satisfaction rising three per cent to 76.2 per cent, ranking Algonquin College second among large colleges in Ontario – and above the Ontario college system average.
As you know, thousands of people around the world are taking part in the Global Climate Strike, a series of events that started on September 20 and that will culminate in a global day of action this Friday, September 27.

Gokul Das Balachandran, a research associate in Algonquin College’s Data Analytics Centre, expects to spend most of Friday in front of a computer screen, watching the live streaming of his native country’s first attempt to land on the moon.
Sometime around 4 p.m. Ottawa time, the landing module of India’s unmanned moon mission, Chandrayaan-2, will touch down on the moon’s southern polar region. If all goes well, the Asian nation will be the fourth country to successfully reach the moon after the United States, Russia, and China. Algonquin College students get access to Shopify’s Open Learning Program
– Students registered in approved Algonquin College programs will have free subscriptions to the online business platform –
OTTAWA – Algonquin College students registered in approved programs will benefit from free subscriptions to Shopify as part of the company’s Open Learning program.
Starting in September 2019, Shopify will provide free subscriptions to Algonquin College students. Business Management and Entrepreneurship (BME) is one example of a program that will participate in the partnership as Shopify and BME have the shared goal of empowering entrepreneurs.
