Algonquin College sees surge in employer satisfaction
OTTAWA — Provincial Key Performance Indicator (KPI) results released today across the province show that not only are Algonquin College graduates finding jobs after graduation, but their employers think their work is outstanding.
The results, which were released by Colleges Ontario earlier today, emphasize that college education is an effective and swift route to employment. About 86 per cent of Ontario college graduates found work within six months of graduation, and more than 92 per cent of employers were satisfied or very satisfied with the graduates they hired.
Some of the highlights for Algonquin College include:
Algonquin’s graduate employment rate increased by 2.5 percentage points compared to last year, above the system average by nearly one percentage point
• In employer satisfaction, Algonquin increased by 5.4 percentage points compared to last year, ranking the college second among large colleges, up from seventh last year. The College is also above the Ontario college system average by 3.1 percentage points
• Like the majority of Ontario colleges, Algonquin saw a decrease in overall student satisfaction numbers (4.2 percentage points). This decline comes in the same academic year as the five-week province-wide work stoppage in late 2017. However, in the category of student satisfaction with the quality of services in the College, Algonquin placed second among large colleges, and was well above the college-system average by 2 percentage points. The College is also ranked second among large colleges for program relevance (giving our students “the knowledge and skills that will be useful” in their future careers) and also second among large colleges for graduate satisfaction, with 80 per cent of our graduates satisfied or very satisfied with their college programs.
OTTAWA – Algonquin College students will put their cybersecurity skills to the test against peers across the city.
On Saturday, Nov. 17th 2018, students selected from Algonquin College, Carleton University, University of Ottawa, and La Cité will compete in teams to attack a vulnerable computer network, break through the cyber defences, take control of the systems and advise the fictitious company on how to defend against their cyberattack.
One of Algonquin’s student teams is from the Computer System Technology – Security program and coached by Patrick Ouellette, Program Coordinator, Cyber Security Programs. Two other teams consist of students from the Bachelor of Information Technology – Network Technology program, a joint collaboration between Algonquin and Carleton University; they are coached by Algonquin’s Rob Brandon, professor, Information and Communications Technology.
Algonquin College announced Monday morning that it was the recipient of funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSERC) College and Community Social Innovation Fund (CCSIF).
The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport, announced investments to support several partnerships that address challenges affecting all Canadians, locally and nationally. Algonquin College alumna wins medals at Invictus Games
OTTAWA — Algonquin College congratulates alumna Naomi Fong on her medal-winning achievements at the 2018 Invictus Games in Sydney, Australia.
An honours graduate of the Social Service Worker program at the College’s Pembroke Campus, Fong won two bronze medals this week in separate Women’s Road Cycling competitions.
Fong was one of 40 Canadians, including 18 military members and 22 veterans, competing in 11 different sports during the week-long games, and was the Team Canada flag bearer for the opening ceremonies on Saturday.
The two-day hockey festival is heading to Ottawa campus for a celebration of hockey on November 3 and 4. Working in partnership with the City of Ottawa, the College will host the free, family-friendly weekend hockey celebration, where there will be live local entertainment, NHL alumni, local celebrities, hockey-themed activities for all ages, and an outdoor viewing party of a nationally televised NHL game.
Hosts Ron MacLean and Tara Slone will broadcast live from Algonquin College on Sunday, Nov. 4 as they tell the stories that celebrate the hockey history and culture that put Nepean on Canada’s hockey map. The festivities include meet-and-greet opportunities with former NHLerJason York and the live Sportsnet NHL broadcast.

Good afternoon,
As you know, I recently announced that we would begin College-wide consultations about moving toward smoke-free campuses in Ottawa, Perth and Pembroke.
We will be launching consultations very soon, but I wanted to update you on a change of plans we are implementing as a result of the recent Ontario Government introduction of Bill 36, Cannabis Statute Law Amendment Act, 2018 that will allow cannabis smoking wherever tobacco is permitted.
We will have a new interim policy that will be in place from Oct. 15, 2018 until Jan. 1, 2019. During this time, our campuses will be smoke-free and we will conduct full consultations to understand the potential impact and develop a permanent policy.

The event will bring together business and community leaders as we honour the important social and economic contributions that Algonquin College alumni make in the community, in Canada and around the world.
