Algonquin College to bestow degrees and awards at Convocation

Five community leaders to address graduates at Canadian Tire Centre

June 17, 2024, Ottawa, Ont. — Steve Barkhouse, Graham Bird, Tomson Highway, Dipak Roy and Chris Phillips will be front and centre this week as they are honoured at the Algonquin College Ottawa Campus Convocation Ceremony at the Canadian Tire Centre.

Four will be awarded honorary degrees and the fifth, Steve Barkhouse, will receive the Fellowship Award. This is the highest honour for Algonquin College and has only been previously presented once in its history.

Each honouree will then address graduates to share advice, guidance, wisdom and perhaps some humour.

From June 18-21, nearly 12,500 graduates will walk the stage, including nine valedictorians.

  • School of Business and Hospitality (Honorary Degree)
    Graham Bird, President and CEO, GBA Development and Project Management

Wednesday, June 19, 2024, 9:30 a.m.

  • School of Health Studies (Honorary Degree)
    Chris Phillips, businessperson; former Ottawa Senators hockey player

Wednesday, June 19, 2024, 7 p.m.

  • School of Advanced Technology (Honorary Degree)
    Dipak Roy, Chair, D-TA Systems Inc.

Thursday, June 20, 2024, 7 p.m.

  • Faculty of Arts, Media and Design (Honorary Degree)
    Tomson Highway, Indigenous playwright, novelist, pianist and songwriter

Friday, June 21, 2024, 2:30 p.m.

  • Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (Fellowship Award)
    Steve Barkhouse, Owner, Amsted Design-Build
