Oct. 17, 2024, Ottawa — On Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, students from Algonquin College’s Community and Justice Services program will congregate in Minto Park near Elgin Street for 24 hours as part of Operation Come Home’s 24 Hours of Homelessness event. During this time, students will beg for money to raise funds and awareness for Ottawa’s homeless population.

Approximately 20 second-year Community and Justice Services students will brave the elements over a busy weekend in downtown Ottawa. The event fundraises Operation Come Home in its efforts to provide support to at-risk and homeless youth.

“For a short time, Algonquin College students gain first-hand experience with the challenges of poverty and homelessness by stepping into the lives of their future clients,” said Cat Baron, professor, Police and Public Safety Institute. “The insights gained from this experience fosters greater compassion awareness and knowledge among learners, enhancing their effectiveness in community and justice service roles.”

In addition to the fundraising efforts, a key goal of the event is to draw attention to the realities faced by those who do not have access to basic needs like shelter, food and proper clothing, things that many people take for granted.

To support this worthy cause, a GoFundMe page has been created with the goal of raising $2,000.

Media are invited to visit students at the corner of Elgin Street and Lewis Street from 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 until 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. Students will also be posting and sharing their experiences via the College’s X account (formerly Twitter).
