Algonquin College Serves Up a New Degree Offering: Bachelor of Culinary Arts & Food Science Program to Launch Fall 2022

For students hungry for a career in hospitality, culinary, food services or food science, Algonquin College is offering a new degree program to feed their souls.
“The Bachelor of Culinary Arts and Food Science (Honours) degree, a first for Ontario, will complement our offerings from the School of Hospitality and Tourism,” said Claude Brulé, President and CEO of Algonquin College. “Our programs provide our learners with the right mix of industry knowledge and real-world experience and our graduates have gone on to work in some of the most prominent restaurants and hotels and culinary organizations in the city across Canada and around the world.”
This four-year program will combine skills for those who want to wear a lab coat and a chef’s coat, and is well suited for those with a passion for food and a love of science.
Topics will include food chemistry, food microbiology, sensory evaluation and food processing, as well as culinary science and food service management. It will also focus on food product development, and enhancing the nutritional value of food products.
“The food and beverage industry is very large and there is a lot of research and development and amazing opportunities for our students when the graduate in a number of different areas,” said Cory Haskins, Academic Chair, Culinary Arts, and Pastry Arts Programs at Algonquin College. “This is an exciting time for the College as we embark on a new style of culinary programming which blends food science and culinary arts. We are excited with all the possibilities that come with this — research, industry partners and connections, and the ability to help with sustainability.”
The program will include two paid summer co-op placements, and degree pathways are available to graduates through five Ontario college programs, including three programs from Algonquin College: Culinary Management, Baking and Pastry Arts Management and Biotechnology – Advanced.
Major food companies and producers seek individuals who have the ability to design, develop and process quality food choices that are healthy, affordable, desirable and safe for consumers. Graduates of the new program will be positioned to find employment opportunities with major food manufacturers or small, private label companies, in the areas of food production management, food technology, product development, quality assurance management, food services, and food research and development, as well as in health-related industries or entrepreneurial endeavours.
Information about the program is currently available on the College website and applications will start being accepted this October.
