Algonquin College joins other Canadian colleges to develop social initiatives

OTTAWA — Algonquin College will host the launch of a Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) program aimed at getting Canadian colleges and institutes to collaborate on socially beneficial projects.

As part of the CICan ImpAct initiative, three pan-Canadian project working groups (PWGs) will set up development initiatives on sustainability, access to education, and social entrepreneurship.

Algonquin College was one of the Canadian colleges CICan selected to participate in the three working groups, in part because of its reputation as an educational institution devoted to building social infrastructure and advancing social innovation.

Representatives from colleges across the country will attend Tuesday’s ImpAct launch, along with officials from CICan, the McConnell Foundation, which is funding the initiative, and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. The three PWGs will hold their inaugural meetings after the launch.

CICan ImpAct follows on Canada’s commitment to the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which calls for action by all member states to end poverty, protect the planet, and improve the lives of people everywhere.

Algonquin, along with other Canadian colleges, can play an important role in delivering on the country’s commitment to the UN’s sustainable development agenda, said Kevin Holmes, Managing Director of Algonquin College’s Social Innovation Lab.

“Colleges are geographically positioned to do a lot of good work, if they work in concert,” he said.
