Algonquin College Spring Convocation
Algonquin College is proud to celebrate the Class of 2019 at this month’s Spring Convocation ceremonies in Pembroke, Perth and Ottawa.
Over the next few weeks graduates and their families will gather together to mark the milestone of graduation as students cross the stage to receive degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
Algonquin will graduate more than 7,800 students this spring. In keeping with Algonquin College’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation of Canada’s Indigenous people, part of President Cheryl Jensen’s address to students will be delivered in the Algonquin language.
The College is also pleased to bestow honorary credentials upon the following distinguished guests:
Bob Chiarelli | Honorary Degree – Algonquin Centre for Construction of Excellence
Former Regional Chair of Ottawa-Carleton

In a political career that spanned three decades, Bob Chiarelli has played a key role in the College’s growth, including the development of some of the buildings on the Ottawa Campus. As a provincial politician, Chiarelli continued to advocate on Algonquin’s behalf by arranging meetings between College administrators and federal and provincial key decision-makers.
As a cabinet minister, one of Chiarelli’s portfolios included the Ministry of Infrastructure, which had a direct impact on Algonquin’s development. He also championed “Algonquin Days” at Queen’s Park to foster discussions between Algonquin’s president, ministers, and officials about the College’s needs. During his time as Mayor of Ottawa, Chiarelli helped get approval for construction of the bridge connecting the ACCE building to the main Campus. Later, during the development stage of the ACCE building, Chiarelli served as a special adviser.
Paul Dewar (posthumously) | Honorary Degree – Police and Public Safety Institute
Canadian Educator and Politician

Paul Dewar was dedicated to public service both inside and outside of the political arena.
He is arguably best known as the NDP MP for Ottawa Centre, but before politics he was a public school teacher and a union executive. During his time as the NDP’s Foreign Affairs critic, Dewar introduced legislation to make generic medication more available in the developing world, and secured funding for the International Criminal Court to oppose violence against women as a weapon of war. After leaving politics in 2015, Dewar continued to champion human rights pushing for the international community to do more to prevent and end mass atrocities. His activism was equally prevalent here at home as he led efforts to establish a national Indigenous centre in Ottawa, and established the Youth Action Now organization.
Julia Dewar will be accepting this honorary degree on behalf of her late husband.
