Algonquin College awarded national accreditation from Cooperative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada

OTTAWA – Algonquin College is one of the first Ontario colleges to earn accreditation from Cooperative Education and Work-Integrated Learning (CEWIL) Canada.

Eight Algonquin programs have been honoured with CEWIL Canada accreditation, a distinction open to all post-secondary institutions across the country.

“This accreditation speaks to our dedication to excellence in co-op and our ambitious plans to lead the Ontario College system in co-op and experiential learning,” said Cheryl Jensen, President and Chief Executive Officer, Algonquin College, in announcing the honour at Thursday’s 2nd annual Co-op Awards of Excellence.

CEWIL Canada’s accreditation standards provide leadership in ensuring quality co-op programming. Accepted programs receive a certificate and are recognized in CEWIL’s directory, and accredited institutions are invited to join CEWIL’s Accreditation Council.

Algonquin’s inaugural cohort of CEWIL Canada accredited programs are: Architectural Technician; Bachelor of Commerce (e-Supply Chain Management) (Honours); Computer Programmer; Computer Systems Technician; Computer Engineering Technician; Construction Engineering Technician; Horticultural Industries; and Internet Applications and Web Development.

Each program is accredited for a six-year period and had to meet a number of institutional and program-specific measures of excellence to earn the distinction. These measures included high-quality supports offered to students, employer engagement in the learning of each student, and also structural components that ensure students experience a number of different work opportunities throughout the entire calendar year.

In its formal Letter of Accreditation, CEWIL Canada thanked “Algonquin College for its ongoing leadership in Canadian co-operative education.”

Algonquin College has a long standing history of providing work-integrated learning to students. With nearly 40 co-op programs offered, the Cooperative Education department is continuously seeking to increase the number of co-op opportunities for its students.

“Each day we strive to deliver a high-quality co-op program to our students and employers. It is an absolute honour to be nationally-recognized for our high-quality co-op program,” said David Hall, Manager, Cooperative Education Department, Algonquin College. “What makes the accreditation process so rewarding is that each of the programs that we submitted for accreditation were subject to a detailed peer review which not only resulted in our accreditation, but it also generated excellent feedback from other leaders in the Canadian cooperative education space who served on the accreditation council.”
