Algonquin College is hosting Rogers Hometown Hockey November 3 and 4

OTTAWA (October 18, 2018) – Algonquin College is excited to be the host venue for RogersTM Hometown HockeyTM Tour presented by Scotiabank and Dodge.


The two-day hockey festival is heading to Ottawa campus for a celebration of hockey on November 3 and 4. Working in partnership with the City of Ottawa, the College will host the free, family-friendly weekend hockey celebration, where there will be live local entertainment, NHL alumni, local celebrities, hockey-themed activities for all ages, and an outdoor viewing party of a nationally televised NHL game.

Hosts Ron MacLean and Tara Slone will broadcast live from Algonquin College on Sunday, Nov. 4 as they tell the stories that celebrate the hockey history and culture that put Nepean on Canada’s hockey map. The festivities include meet-and-greet opportunities with former NHLer Jason York and the live Sportsnet NHL broadcast.

Algonquin College students will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience at this event, through volunteer and part-time employment opportunities, as well as a wide variety of unique experiences Algonquin College and the Rogers team are planning.

Rogers Hometown Hockey begins on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Noon ET at Algonquin College and will conclude on Sunday evening following the Rogers Hometown Hockey outdoor viewing party. The evening’s broadcast kicks off with a special pre-game show hosted by MacLean and Slone from the Sportsnet Mobile Studio beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET, followed by a showdown between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Ottawa Senators on Sportsnet, Sportsnet NOW and Rogers NHL LIVE.

Rogers Hometown Hockey Festival Details:

The free hockey-themed weekend features games, prize giveaways, fun activities, and live local entertainment for the whole family, including:

  • Rogers Fan Hub: Rogers celebrates your community within the Fan Hub. Help support local minor hockey and participate in fun and interactive experiences, autograph signings with NHL alum Jason York, video game stations, bubble hockey, and popcorn!
  • Sportsnet Virtual Photo Booth and Interactive Games: Fans have the chance to get close to their favourite players through virtual technology. Fans can take photos with virtual images of NHL stars, and have the photo emailed directly to their device for social sharing and their chance to win great prizes. In addition, hockey players of all ages will be able to show off their hockey skills and see how they match up to the NHL stars!
  • The Steve Goodtime Rock n’ Roll Hockey Show: Come see a hilarious rock n’ roll circus show performed by Steve Goodtime. With routines including mouthstick, fire breathing and juggling, he tops it all off with the greatest show you have ever seen! It is an experience that the family will never forget.
  • Scotiabank Community Hockey Rink: A family-friendly outdoor hockey space to engage hockey fans, interact with NHL alumni, celebrate the game and play ball hockey. Scotiabank will also be donating $15,000 to minor hockey associations in the community.
  • Ram Haul of Fame: Features the Ram 1500 in a hockey-themed obstacle course that will test the skills of fans of all ages. Also, fans have the opportunity to enter the Breakaway Giveaway contest to win an all-new 2019 Ram 1500 for their family and $5,000 for their local minor hockey association. All contest entrants will receive a free branded giveaway courtesy of Dodge.
  • Dr. Oetker Giuseppe Pizzeria: Fans can enjoy a complimentary slice of Giuseppe Pizzeria pizza fresh out of the oven, and learn more about the Find Giuseppe contest with many great prizes to be won!
  • Tim Hortons: As fans are enjoying the festival, warm up with a complimentary coffee or hot chocolate from the Tim Hortons mobile truck.
  • Playmobil Kids Zone: Fans have the chance to face off against friends and family with the PLAYMOBIL NHL Arena and its lineup of NHL figures. In the zone, fans will also be able to enter to win a new NHL playset.
  • Live Local Entertainment: Live music featured throughout the weekend beginning with Brea Lawrenson performing on Saturday followed by Rainwater Whiskey on Sunday.
  • Giving Together to support hockey in your community: Every week Rogers is Giving Together to support hockey in each community. All proceeds support minor hockey organizations. Attendees can participate in 50/50 draws or by purchasing popcorn or food from the on-site BBQ where all proceeds will be donated.

  • Features:
    • Steve Yzerman: Steve Yzerman is one of the game’s greatest and his achievements on the ice are well known. But what’s not widely known is what Yzerman was like growing up. After moving from British Columbia to Nepean, Ontario at the age of 10, he became friends with former NHL goaltender Darren Pang. The two of them shed some light on those early years.
    • Todd Nicholson: After becoming a paraplegic in 1987, Todd Nicholson vowed that there would be nothing he wouldn’t be able to do—he would just have to do it a little bit differently than most people. More than 30 years later, Nicholson is a Paralympic sledge hockey multi-medallist who was most recently Canada’s Chef de Mission at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games. His resolve was put to the test again in late September when a tornado tore through Dunrobin, his hometown 40 kilometres west of Ottawa, and destroyed his home and the homes of his neighbours and his brother. Todd and his family are relying on their community to help pull their lives back together—the same community that taught Todd to persevere in 1987.
