Algonquin College Prepares to Mark National Day of Truth and Reconciliation Sept. 30

Algonquin College is recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30 with a variety of engaging and meaningfulOrange title card with the words National Day for Truth and Reconciliation activities and events at the College’s Ottawa, Perth and Pembroke campuses.

  • Ottawa Campus Recognition Ceremony
    10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Nawapon (C100)

President and CEO Claude Brulé will speak about the College’s commitment to TRI. Professor of Indigenous Education Sarah Wright will speak about why Sept. 30 is recognized and then read The Orange Shirt Story by Phyllis Webstad for the Early Learning Centre children and employees.

  • Student Support Services, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., AC Hub (second floor, Student Commons)

Students invited to decorate orange paper t-shirts and hang them on the windows in the AC Hub and create a beaded keychain while learning about the significance of beading in Indigenous cultures.

The Mamidosewin Centre and the Algonquin Students’ Association are screening the film Indian Horse.

  • Kwey — Indigenous Language Video Series, Sept 4. to Sept. 30

Videos sharing words, expressions and phrases in the Anishinàbe Algonquin language, the traditional language of this region. New videos include greetings and salutations and common phrases, the Seven Grandfather Teachings as well as expressions of healing and understanding.

  • Tebwewin – Truth- Indigenous Initiatives Office, Sept. 12, 17 and, 25

An enlightening event focused on the importance of Tebwewin – Truth. Explore the power of reconciliation and sharing the impact of the residential school system.

Join the President’s Office, Indigenous Initiatives Office and the AC Hub in contributing to a profound community art initiative, the Truth and Reconciliation Art Installation at The Canadian Library. This event will take place at the AC Hub from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
