Medical Radiation Technology student wins $5,000 in free tuition at Algonquin College

OTTAWA (Sep. 20, 2023) – A first-year student in the Medical Radiation Technology program is the 2023-24 winner of the annual Tuition Contest at Algonquin College. Jenna Mattatall had arrived in Ottawa one day prior to learning about her contest win, after driving 13 hours from her hometown of Truro, N.S.

College employees from the the School of Health Studies, Student Support Services and the Marketing department surprised Mattatall with news of her win in the AC Hub on the Ottawa Campus, waiving pompoms and cheering. The Algonquin College mascot was on hand to welcome Mattatall, along with Erin Stitt-Cavanagh, Dean, School of Health Studies and Paula Benbow, Chair, Allied Health, presenting a cheque in the amount of $5,000. The full amount will be applied to Mattatall’s tuition expenses for the 2023-24 academic year.

“Winning the tuition contest was absolutely overwhelming and exciting for me,” said Mattatall. “I can’t believe that from 3,000 applications they selected mine. It’s going to open a lot of different doors for me.”

Mattatall’s entry was chosen in a random draw with over 2,800 total entries received. Applicants were required to be new students enrolled full-time for the 2023-24 academic year, and provide a response to the question: What do you hope to change by coming to Algonquin College? Mattatall’s response was to “Provide inclusive patient care to all members of my local rural health care community and become an interprofessional leader in my workplace.”

The tuition contest winnings give a significant boost to Mattatall as she begins her academic journey at Algonquin College. After graduation, she plans on returning to Nova Scotia to help reduce wait times for diagnostic imaging in the province while providing excellent patient care.

“Right now we are in an absolute staffing crisis for all health care workers but especially [medical radiation technologists],” said Mattatall. “Even though I’m only one person I hope I can make a big difference in the health care system in Nova Scotia.”

The College congratulates Mattatall on her win and is honoured to contribute to her journey of turning hopes and dreams into lifelong success.
