Posted on Wednesday, January 11th, 2023
OTTAWA (JAN. 11, 2023) – Algonquin College is offering an advanced credential to the competitive field of computer programing. The Computer Programming and Analysis program is part of a multi-college collaboration model that serves as a third year to the two-year Computer Programming Ontario College Diploma. Students from partner colleges complete this third year at Algonquin College using remote technologies via multimodal classrooms. Currently, Sault College has partnered in this multimodal delivery, with additional Ontario colleges expected to join in future.
Graduates from other Ontario colleges with an Ontario Computer Programming Diploma are welcome to continue their studies by applying for the Computer Programming and Analysis program, offered in-person at Algonquin College’s Ottawa Campus.
“We are excited to announce the innovative Computer Programming and Analysis Advanced Diploma program, which prepares learners to meet the challenges presented by rapidly changing technology,” said Claude Brulé, Algonquin College President and CEO. “The multi-college collaboration model of this program means students from Ontario colleges have the opportunity to continue their advanced computer programming education here at Algonquin College.”
The three-year program specializes in information systems design, development and deployment. Learners develop skills in cybersecurity, emerging trends, entrepreneurship and business to bridge software development and the needs of the business world. An optional cooperative education (co-op) version of the program allows students to integrate their classroom learning with a real-world experience though two paid work terms.
“The co-op version of the Computer Programming and Analysis program provides students with the opportunity to develop their skillset in the workplace while building their professional network,” said Sandra Brancatelli, Academic Chair of Information & Communications Technology at Algonquin College. “This program further prepares students for a career in software development and systems analysis by building on the high-level vocational learning outcomes from the Computer Programming diploma.”
Learners are expected to enter the program from diverse pathways. Many will be second career, recent high school graduates, or currently work as a programmer in industry or government with no formal computer programming credential. Program graduates are well positioned to continue their education in a number of related programs, including graduate certificate, bachelor and master programs in a field related to computer science, computer engineering or information technology.
“Graduates may work in a variety of different fields as almost all sectors of industry require programmers. Fields may include healthcare, education, commerce, science, finance and production,” said Stanley Pieda, Computer Programming and Analysis Program Coordinator. “The knowledge and skills offered in this program will help to accelerate students’ careers when they enter the workforce.”
