Algonquin College Community Gathering: Every Child Matters
Posted on Monday, June 7th, 2021
Dear Learners and Colleagues,
Algonquin College invites you and your families to Community Gathering: Every Child Matters on Thursday, June 10, 2021 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
This virtual gathering is a chance for the Algonquin College community to turn its hearts and minds to residential school victims, survivors and their families.
Please watch this video message and invitation from Ron (Deganadus) McLester, Algonquin College’s Vice President, Truth, Reconciliation & Indigenization.
The event will honour the lives and memories of the 215 children found in a mass grave at the residential school in Kamloops, B.C. Every Child Matters will also create a safe, open space for the College community to connect, mourn, discuss and reflect on the Kamloops tragedy and its implications. Ahead of this special event, Algonquin College is making a donation of 215 clothing items to Minwaashin Lodge, an Ottawa based Indigenous Women’s Support Centre – one for each of the young lives lost in Kamloops. (Those interested in making their own donation can visit here.)
The Community Gathering will include music, poetry, special remarks from Elder Bertha Skye (Wolf Clan, Cree) and members of the Algonquin College Executive Team, a moment of silence, and open space for remarks from attendees. Employees, students and their families can communicate via chat or by speaking live.
Coming together we are stronger and can help build a path forward. Please feel free to bring your families – including children – to this important Community Gathering. Students and employees have received a registration link via email.
Sincerely,
Algonquin College Communications
