Algonquin celebrates Virtual Capital Pride 2020

On behalf of Algonquin College, I want to wish this year’s Virtual Capital Pride Festival every success.

Diversity and inclusiveness are central to the spirit of this dynamic festival – and they are also key strengths of our College community.

For the last two years, Algonquin has participated in Capital Pride’s annual parade. Last summer, in one of my first public events as President, I had the pleasure of marching alongside 80 members of our community behind a rainbow-covered Algonquin College fire truck. While the COVID-19 pandemic has sidelined the downtown parade this year and made virtual events necessary, Algonquin will celebrate this important festival online in a spirit of solidarity – engaged in the wide variety of performances, speakers and panels.

Algonquin’s core values include Caring and Respect, and we stand by those words with our actions every day. Inclusion and diversity make us stronger. We are committed to being an institution that removes all barriers to success – where opportunities are open to everyone equally.

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote diversity, Algonquin continues to implement 2SLGBTQ+ initiatives, including recently renewing its membership with Pride at Work Canada, which includes access to the job board, monthly learning webcasts, and advisory services. The Students’ Association is hosting its annual Pride Week on all three Algonquin campuses from September 28 to October 2 this year, and will be hosting an online event this weekend in partnership with Capital Pride and the AC Hub.

I encourage members of our own community to participate in the exciting slate of virtual activities Capital Pride is running this week. As a College, we stand together in celebration with our 2SLGBTQ+ learners and employees, and allies of this community.

Sincerely,

Claude Brulé

President and CEO
