OTTAWA — Algonquin College will host 12 of the country’s top chefs this weekend as they do culinary battle in the prestigious Canadian Culinary Championships.
The two-day contest, which begins on Friday and concludes Saturday night, involves three separate competitions: Mystery Wine Pairing, Black Box Competition, and The Grand Finale Competition.
Thirty-six culinary students, all volunteers, have been selected to work with the competing chefs. They will help prepare the dishes while another 24 students will assist in plating the food at specific events.
“Algonquin College is proud to host the Canadian Culinary Championships this weekend, and to have our Culinary Management students play such an active role,” said President and CEO of Algonquin College, Claude Brulé. “It is a great opportunity for our students to work with and learn from some of the best chefs in the country.”
Early Friday morning, Algonquin culinary students will assist the 12 chefs in the College’s kitchens for the first challenge. Their culinary creations will be judged that evening at the Canadian Space and Aviation Museum.
The chefs are back in the College’s kitchens Saturday morning for the Black Box Competition. In this creative challenge, the chefs receive a black box containing a small array of various foods and must create and plate a judge-pleasing dish within an hour. Ticketed guests dining in Algonquin’s Restaurant International will watch a live stream of the chefs in action. They will also enjoy a meal prepared by other culinary students, and served by students from the Hotel and Restaurant Management program.
Algonquin’s culinary students will then assist the chefs in preparing their signature dishes Saturday evening for the Grand Finale at the Shaw Centre.
