Algonquin College’s School of Hospitality & Tourism Cooking for Operation Big Turkey
Posted on Monday, December 23rd, 2019
On Christmas Eve, Operation Big Turkey will be serving free holiday meals at five locations across Ottawa. Made from scratch, this delicious feast for 1600 guests will be prepared by the faculty chefs and students from Algonquin College’s School of Hospitality and Tourism, as well as volunteers, starting on December 23. Fresh ingredients for the traditional turkey meal, with a vegetarian option, will be generously donated by long time supporter Farm Boy.
Now in its 15th year, Operation Big Turkey is asking Ottawa to spread some holiday cheer by accompanying an individual or group who would enjoy a holiday meal. There are people in our community who might need transportation or don’t want to go alone. One small act of kindness will make a big impact, especially during the holiday season.
Everyone is welcome to take a seat at Operation Big Turkey. Guests are invited to celebrate the holidays with their community as volunteers serve a delicious turkey dinner with all the traditional sides as well as a vegetarian pasta dish. No reservations are required; simply show up and enjoy a really good meal.
“Operation Big Turkey is truly a community meal. We have guests who are less fortunate, alone, or simply want to join in the holiday cheer. Everyone is welcome to share this Christmas Eve meal and with good company,” said Chris Knight, founding member of Operation Big Turkey. “Thank you to Farm Boy for donating all the ingredients, our sponsors and 200 volunteers who make Operation Big Turkey possible year after year.”
“Algonquin College’s core values include caring and respect – ideals that are front-and-centre in Operation Big Turkey. We are incredibly proud to be part of this annual event and to collaborate with Gusto to provide hundreds of people a traditional holiday dinner on Christmas Eve,” said Claude Brulé, President and Chief Executive Officer of Algonquin College. “Chef Scott Warrick and his team will be in our culinary labs preparing more than 300 kilograms of turkey to create another delicious meal from scratch.”
On Tuesday, December 24th 2019, volunteers will welcome and serve guests at the following locations:
