Historic Win for AC Team in Marketing, Sales Competition

Algonquin College has made history after placing first overall in the 39th Annual Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition (OCMC) on Friday, November 22.

OCMC is an annual sales and marketing competition comprised of eight case competitions in various Marketing disciplines such as, Retail Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Direct Marketing, Integrated Marketing Communications, Prospect Pitch and International Marketing. There are also two individual events (Sales Presentation and Job Interview) as well as a four-person team event (Quizbowl) consisting of members from different colleges answering questions against the buzzer. This year, 12 Ontario Colleges participated with over 300 graduating-level students showcasing their business talents to earn top awards for teamwork and strategic thinking.

Students on Algonquin’s team were encouraged to continually challenge themselves leading up to the competition as they were coached on critical thinking, problem solving, presentation skills, creativity and marketing specific skills. This is not an easy task for anyone, but throughout the past 12 weeks the students were motivated by a number of inspirational quotes, including these two by Ken Venturi and Michelangelo, respectively:

“You don’t have to be better than everyone else, just better than you ever thought you could be.”
(Ken Venturi)
“The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but rather that it is too low and we reach it.” (Michelangelo)

This tireless training by the students and the selfless sacrifice by the full-time, part-time and alumni coaches really paid off. The Algonquin College team finished in the top five in nine out of 10 Case Events and finished fourth in Quizbowl. An amazing achievement resulting in a landslide victory of first place overall!
