Algonquin College supports Ontario budget commitment to modernize apprenticeship training.

The 2019 Ontario Budget commitment to create a one-window digital portal for apprentices will produce a more highly qualified workforce.

“The government’s plan to modernize apprenticeship training will create more opportunities for our learners and help narrow the skills gap in Ontario,” said Cheryl Jensen, President and Chief Executive Officer of Algonquin College. “Algonquin College is the proud home of one of the largest apprenticeship programs in the province and a new digital apprenticeship portal will make it easier to connect demand with opportunity.”

The creation of a digital portal will make the apprenticeship application process straightforward and easily accessible, and help match people seeking to become apprentices with willing employers. Algonquin College supports the government’s efforts to create this new portal.

Other budget highlights include:

  • Establishing programs to encourage people to enter the skilled trades.
  • Launching a new micro-credentials pilot this spring to provide people with the skills employers are seeking.

The budget also calls for a transformation of post-secondary education so that 60 per cent of provincial funding will be tied to performance outcomes by 2024-25.

“We look forward to continuing to work with our partners in the provincial government to strengthen the quality of our programs, prepare our learners for the careers of tomorrow, and support the ever-changing needs of Ontario’s economy,” Jensen said.
