Algonquin College sees surge in employer satisfaction

OTTAWA — Provincial Key Performance Indicator (KPI) results released today across the province show that not only are Algonquin College graduates finding jobs after graduation, but their employers think their work is outstanding.

The results, which were released by Colleges Ontario earlier today, emphasize that college education is an effective and swift route to employment. About 86 per cent of Ontario college graduates found work within six months of graduation, and more than 92 per cent of employers were satisfied or very satisfied with the graduates they hired.

Some of the highlights for Algonquin College include:

  • Algonquin’s graduate employment rate increased by 2.5 percentage points compared to last year, above the system average by nearly one percentage point

    • In employer satisfaction, Algonquin increased by 5.4 percentage points compared to last year, ranking the college second among large colleges, up from seventh last year. The College is also above the Ontario college system average by 3.1 percentage points

    • Like the majority of Ontario colleges, Algonquin saw a decrease in overall student satisfaction numbers (4.2 percentage points). This decline comes in the same academic year as the five-week province-wide work stoppage in late 2017. However, in the category of student satisfaction with the quality of services in the College, Algonquin placed second among large colleges, and was well above the college-system average by 2 percentage points. The College is also ranked second among large colleges for program relevance (giving our students “the knowledge and skills that will be useful” in their future careers) and also second among large colleges for graduate satisfaction, with 80 per cent of our graduates satisfied or very satisfied with their college programs.

Historically, Algonquin has been a leader among Ontario’s large colleges in student satisfaction, receiving KPI scores above the provincial average since 2013.

“Even though we can see that last year’s work stoppage had a ripple effect for colleges across the province, we are very pleased with the results for Algonquin,” said President Cheryl Jensen. “We are moving forward and our students and alumni have given us a very strong report card. Even better, employers have once again told us that our graduates are not only ready for their careers, but that they are excelling in them.”

All 24 of Ontario’s public sector colleges participate annually in the Colleges Ontario KPI survey program, which entails providing a mandatory satisfaction surveys to all enrolled students. The surveys measure outcomes such as students’ satisfaction with their courses, learning outcomes, facilities, and student services. Additionally, recent alumni are surveyed regarding their satisfaction as graduates and their employment status post-graduation. Finally, employers are surveyed to measure their satisfaction with the Ontario college graduates they hired. The results are then analyzed by an independent research company.

“Our career-focused programs provide an excellent pathway to employment,” said Linda Franklin, the president and CEO of Colleges Ontario. “In this increasingly competitive economy, Ontario college graduates enter the workforce with the professional expertise that is valued by employers.”
